لو نفضت أشعاره نفضة
If his poems were shaken and scattered,
فتى يستمد البدر من فضل نوره
A youth from whom the full moon borrows light
لك الله إني ما بعدت مسهد
For your sake, I swear I'm sleepless
جفاؤك كل يوم في مزيد
Your coldness grows each day
إذا أنت لم تزرع وأبصرت حاصدا
If you did not plant and saw a harvester
أتتنا العذارى الغيد في حلل النهى
The maidens came to us, robed in modesty's garb
وشيدت مجدي بين قومي فلم أقل
I built my glory among my people, yet said naught
وما سلب الشمس الكسوف ضياءها
And the eclipse robbed not the sun of its brightness
من ذا الغزال الفاتن الطرف
Who is this graceful gazelle, so charming
وما أخشى قصورا عن مرام
I do not fear falling short of my hopes,
ليلة للعيون فيها وللأسماع
A night for eyes in it and for companionship
قل للأمير الذي فخر الزمان به
Say to the prince whom the time took pride in,
بقيت بقاء الدهر يا كهف أهله
You have remained for eternity, O cave of its people,
إذا زادت الأيام فينا تحاملا
When days grow harsher towards us
ألا يا أيها الملك المعلى
O exalted King, pray grant
اقرا السلام على الأمير وقل له
Send greetings of peace to the prince and tell him
فاسلم لأفراد المعاني إنها
Surrender to the individuals of meanings, for they
أفدي الذي قال وفي كفه
I would lay down my life for the one who said, while cupping his hand:
رب ذنب ينمي على العذر حتى
How many a sin grows by excuses
هذا الهلال شبيهه في حسنه
This crescent moon, in its beauty
وأرى المديح إذا عداك نقيصة
I see all praise unworthy if not of you
إذا انحاز عنك الغوث واحتفل العدا
When aid forsakes you and triumph your foes,
بعزم يراه السيف أولى بغمده
With resolve he sees the sword as more deserving of its sheath,
وما الشعر إلا ما استفز ممدحا
Poetry is naught but what provokes the praised
ألم تر أنواء الربيع كأنما
Have you not seen the spring breeze as though
يهدي إلى العلماء من أنفاسه
He grants scholars from his breaths
قل للزمان الذي أبدى عجائبه
Tell time, which reveals its wonders,
قد صفا الجو واستحال نسيما
The weather has cleared and turned into a breeze
أنثر على خدي من وردك
Let your roses be strewn on my cheeks,
ووفاك وفد الشكر من كل وجهة
Gratitude delegations come from all directions
يا من إذا نظر الزمان
O you whose glance,
ليهن ويسعد من به سعد الفضل
May he rejoice and be gladdened, he in whom nobility was gladdened
يقربن طلاب العلا من سمائها
They bring students of knowledge closer to its heavens,
أعلى المطالب أدناها إلى العطب
The highest of demands is the lowest in grace
سقت بلدي أيديكم وتعطفت
My country prospered by your hands, and was moved
يا ليت عيني تحملت ألمك
Oh, if only my eyes could bear your pain
أنجز الدهر في فنائك عهدي
Time completed against me in your demise
لحاظك أقدار وكفك مزنة
Your embrace has such worth, your palm so gentle,
وأغن من أربابه أرزى به
He sang more beautifully than the ones who adored him,
سقى جانبي بغداد أخلاف مزنة
The descendants of Muzainah have watered the outskirts of Baghdad
جل والله ما دهاك وعزا
By God, he was not lacking in consolation and honor
وتركي مواساة الأخلاءِ بالذي
I leave consoling false friends to what
تبيت تحلج طول الليل منكمشا
I pass the night folded, while all night long
وغنج عينك وما أودعت
The charm of your eyes, and what their lids conceal
ولو تراني وقد ظفرت به
If you could see me when I've gained access
أغر أروع تلهينا وقائعه
The most wondrous, finest tales are his exploits
من عاذري من زمن ظالم
From an unjust time that makes excuses,
قد برح الشوق بمشتاقك
Longing has set out to your admirer
نشوان يلقى المعتفى متهللا
Joyfully he meets his beloved, swaying,
تعاليت عن قدر المدائح صاعدا
You transcended the worth of praises, ascending,
وفارقت حتى ما أسر بمن دنا
I parted from those whose nearness brought me no joy
لقد صرعتني خلفة الدهر صرعة
Time's vicissitudes have struck me down with a blow
أبى سيد السادات إلا تظرفا
The lord of lords insisted on being graceful,
هذا أبو مضر كفتنا كفه
This is Abu Mudhar, his palm has sufficed us,
ليهن الصاحب المسعود عيد
May this auspicious friend enjoy Festival days
لا وجفون يغضها العذل
No eyelids decline it, ardor effaces,
على مهجتي تجني الحوادث والدهر
Misfortunes and fate scoff at my determination,
بالله فض العقيق عن برد
In God's name, break the crystal over chilled wine
أوما انثنيت عن الوداع بلوعة
O you who turned away from farewell in sorrow,
سقى الغيث أودمعي وقل كلاهما
The rain quenched it or my tears did the same
جزاء فتى تعرض للبعاد
The fate of a young man estranged from his loved ones
الدهر مستعجل يخب
Time is rushing, don't delay
تنبه الغيث بعد النوم فاندفقا
The rain awoke after slumber and poured down,
فتى كيفما ملنا رأينا له يدا
A youth whose generous hand we saw extended
وإذا خفت من خليل ملالا
And if you fear boredom from an intimate friend,
فإن يك قد سلا وثناه عني
If he has turned away and abandoned me
ولما تداعت للغروب شموسهم
When their suns set for the sunset,
أبي فضله أن أغتدي غير شاكر
I refuse to be ungrateful for his bounty
لقيت أبا يحيى عشية جئته
I met Abu Yahya one evening when I visited him
سأبعد عنكم وأروض نفسي
I will distance myself from you all and tame my soul
هذي المكارم والعلياء تفتخر
These noble traits and sublimities take pride
أبا قاسم ما للحجى عند معدل
Abu Qasim, trials hold no weight for the resolute,
أراجعة تلك الليالي كعهدها
I revisit those nights as in their era
أسأت إلى نفسي أريد لها نفعا
I wronged myself, though I wanted what would benefit me,
أحب اسمه من أجله وسميه
ترحلت عن بغداد أطيب منزل
ومن حق من يمشي مع العور أن يرى
أنا الولي الذي إذا كشفت
يتملك الأحرار بالإيناس
إذا استشرفت عيانك جانب تلعة
كريم يرى أن الرجاء مواعد
وما أقيم بدار لا أعز بها
بك الدهر يندى ظله ويطيب
التصابي بلا شباب محال
قوم إذا خرأوا خلوه وانصرفوا
من أين للعارض الساري تلهبه
شاور سواك إذا نابتكَ نائبة
ما لمخلوق بمخلوق
بعيني ما يخفي الوزير وما يبدي
أقول لسار في شمال وراقد
وكنت تولى الله حفظك سيدي
بدأت فأسلفت التفضل والبرا
الهجر أروح من وصل على حذر
وكفك إنها البحر الغرير
ما تطعمت لذة العيش حتى
وإذا ما الصديق عنك تولى
وقالوا اضطرب في الأرض فالرزق واسع
تركنا أرض مصر لكل فدم
وكنت متى أشحذ بلفظك خاطري
يقولون لي فيك انقباض وإنما
يا نسيم الجنوب بالله بلغ
قصير الثياب فاحش عند بيته
