- أراح أهيل موذية النياقاMudhiyah's little clan brought the she-camels in at dusk,
- أرق العين خيال قد طرقAn apparition came by night and kept my eye awake,
- أرقت لسجع البكا والحمامI lay awake to the cadenced weeping of the doves,
- أشاقك برق بالصفيحة لامعDid gleaming lightning at al-Sufayha stir your longing?
- أشجاك ربع بالصفيحة مائحDid a leaning ruin at al-Safiha grieve you,
- أطويت من دون الفتاة جناحاHave you folded your wing away from the maiden,
- ألا أي هذي الأرسم اللائي أصبحتAh, which of these traces of dwellings, now become
- ألا عجت بالمعهد المقفرHow strange is the deserted institute,
- ألا فاحبساني اليوم قود النجائبCome, you two, hold back the long-necked noble camels for me today,
- ألا فاصبحينا ابنة الأكرمCome, give us morning wine, daughter of the noblest man,
- ألا في سبيل المجد ما أنا صانعBehold, whatever I do is in the cause of glory:
- ألا ليت صولة يوم الحبيلAh, would that Sawlah, on the day of al-Hubayl,
- ألا هبلتك يا صعب الهبولAh, Saʿb, may your mother be bereaved of you!
- الخيل أفضل ما يجبى ويصطنعHorses are the finest things to acquire and nurture,
- أللدار من أكناف قو فعرعرIs it the dwelling among the outskirts of Qaw and Ar'ar?
- ألية بالمشعر الحرامI swear by al-Mash'ar al-Haram,
- ألية بر بالجياد الصواهلA righteous man's oath, by the neighing steeds,
- أمرتبع أم أنت ليس بمنزلAre you a spring encampment, or no dwelling at all?
- أمعوج أم أنت غير معوجWill you turn aside, or will you not turn aside
- أمن رسم دار كاليماني المخلقIs it at the traces of a dwelling, like worn Yemeni cloth,
- أمن عرفان أطلال بواليIs it from recognizing timeworn ruins
- إن السوابق كلهاIndeed, all the swift steeds
- أنا ترب الوفا ورب المعاليI am fidelity’s companion and lord of lofty attainments,
- أنا من راية في وجد وهمBecause of Raya, I am in longing and sorrow,
- أهاجك اكتئابا واذكاراHave they stirred sadness and remembrance in you—
- أيا من لطرف واكف العبراتO you whose tender glances and sorrowful heart
- بموذية عنا الركاب استقلتThe riding camels departed from us bearing Mudhiyah.
- تأوب طيف راية من بعيدRaya's phantom came by night from afar
- خليلي عوجا بوادي شجبMy two friends, turn aside into the valley of Shajab,
- خليلي مرا بالرسوم الدوائرMy two companions, pass by the effaced traces—
- دعاك الهوى واستجهلتك المعالمDesire has called you, and the landmarks have stirred your folly.
- دعاني الهوى العذري بالقسم موهناChaste love summoned me with an oath, late at night,
- راية يا ذات الخبا والهودجRaya, O lady of the tent and the howdah,
- زارتك راية بعد حول كاملRayah visited you after a full year,
- سوف أسقيكم سلافا من غضبI shall give you pure wine of wrath to drink,
- صرفت بالا عن سكيYou turned your thoughts away from Sukayna,
- عرفت بعالج فببطن قوAt ‘Alij, then in the valley of Qaww, I recognized
- عفى الربع بالنجدين من أم شائقUmm Sha’iq’s campsite at al-Najdayn has faded,
- عقابي أمر من العلقمMy punishment is more bitter than colocynth,
- عوجا المطي على رسوم المنزلThe mount swaying upon the ruins of the house,
- قف بوادي العقر ثم سلStop in the valley of al-‘Aqr, then ask
- قفا بلوى الأرائك من سحامStop, you two, at al-Ara'ik's winding sands in Suham;
- قل للمشغوف بربط الخيلTell the one enamored of tethering horses,
- كل الفخار إلى جنابي يرجعAll glory returns to my side,
- كلفنا بالصوارم والصعادWe were enamored of keen swords and straight spears,
- كم دون راية من ذي جفجف جلدHow much hard, rugged country lies between us and Raya,
- لدى سمرات بالصفيحة ظبيةBy acacias at al-Ṣafīḥa is a gazelle,
- لراية أطلال كرقم الأعاجمRayah has ruins like the writing of foreigners,
- لراية ربع بالصفيحة دارسRayah's dwelling-site at al-Sufayha is effaced;
- لراية ربع بالعقيق فكبكبRaya has a dwelling-site at al-Aqiq, then Kabkab,
- لراية وجه يكسف الشمس والبدراRāya has a face that eclipses the sun and the full moon,
- لمن الديار طوامس أعلامهاTo whom belong these dwellings, their landmarks effaced?
- لموذية بالسفح من منح طللMudhiyah has a ruined campsite on the slope at Manah.
- لموذية بين الانيعم فالخالTo Mudhiyah, between al-Unay‘im and al-Khal, belongs
- لموذية لدى منح رسومMudhiyah has traces of dwellings near Manah.
- لو أن دون مطالب العلياءIf, before the pursuit of
- لولا طلابي للعلىWere it not for my quest for lofty heights,
- لي في الفصاحة حكمة وبيانI possess wisdom and clear expression in eloquence,
- ما بال راية أضحى انصرماWhat ails Rayah, now that our bond is severed?
- ما بال عينك منها الدمع مدرارWhat ails your eye, that tears pour from it,
- نأت بموذية القود المراسيلThe long-necked, swift-striding camels bore Mudhiyah far away
- نبأ له تصلى القلوب وتخشعNews at which hearts burn and bow humbly,
- نعم ساور الهم الفؤاد فأبهراYes, grief assailed the heart and left it breathless;
- هل الطلل المخلد بالوجينWill the enduring ruin on the stony slope
- وقفت على ربع لراية ناقتيI halted my she-camel at Raya's deserted dwelling,
- وكم غداة اللقاAnd how many, on the morning of battle,
- يا أيها الغادي علىO you who set out in the morning upon
- يا دار راية أبلى ثوب جدتهاO dwelling of Rayah, the garment of whose freshness was worn away
- يا مدلجي ليلهم أقيمواO travelers through their night, halt!
- يا هل رأيت بين فيد فاللوىO, have you seen between Fayd and al-Liwa
- يا هل شجاك نوى الخليط الظاعنOh, has the parting of your departing companions grieved you?
- يمينا بالصوارم والحرابI swear by keen swords and spears,
