I swear by keen swords and spears,

and by marked, purebred Arabian steeds,

and by every full-length coat of linked mail, like a still pool,

that turns back the keen sword with its edge blunted.

For praise lies in plunging into death,

and sheathing keen swords in necks,

and freely giving provisions and wealth,

and guarding honor from blame and blemish,

and shielding the neighbor from his oppressors' wrong,

and keeping the tongue free of lies.

I am the son of those foremost in lofty honors,

and the humbler of the haughty and the fierce in their wrath.

I am the king who has ruled over humankind,

and the house of glory and unalloyed ancestral honor.

My flint never fails to spark in noble deeds,

and my resolve never falters amid calamities.

    تناصبُها جفانٌ كالجوابيِ

    And I always have cauldrons firmly set;

opposite them stand serving bowls like reservoirs.

All kings bow to my might,

and dark clouds envy my palm.

Nor do I seek a screen between myself and a petitioner,

when a king shuts himself away behind chamberlains.

When the kings of earth earn blame,

then praise is my portion and what I earn.

And though aged, pure wine is drunk,

yet the blood of battle's horsemen is my drink.

And mine are two days: one of bounty, one of misery,

and mine are two tastes: honey and bitter sap.

And a fire guides the lost by night

to the finest young man and delectable fare.

I am he who slakes the thirst of keen swords and tall spears,

and the fortress of the graceful, tender, budding-breasted maiden.

I am life, through pardon, to those who wrong me,

if they submit; my punishment is their death.

I give to those desiring gifts, without being asked,

and give to petitioners without reckoning.

And kings' hands tremble in fear

when they take up my letter to read it.

Can kings match me? No, by my Lord!

And how far apart are lions and wolves!

And, oh, how can glass compare with tall spears?

And how far apart are the sea and a mirage's gleam!

I shall send the tyrants a gift: a bristling, mighty host,

surging like a flood of clashing billows,

and horses that have deliberately forsaken water

to drink the blood of skulls and necks.

Upon them rides every awe-inspiring Ya'rubi warrior,

fierce in battle, his presence feared.

So tell the lords of fortresses: take heed, wait a little!

Tomorrow I shall shower you with punishment's rain.

And who is like me? What young man is my equal

when matters grow too grave for reproach,

and war draws in men who have not braved

its blaze, where it is stoked to raging flame,

and terror reveals fair, soft-skinned women

emerging from howdahs and domed tents,

and they say: Where is the defender,

and the subduer of every creature with claw and fang?

You will find me there in my battle gear,

splintering the skull of the dreaded champion.

The men flee from me in battle,

like sheep into whose midst a forest lion has charged.
