Desire has called you, and the landmarks have stirred your folly.
Love called you and the landmarks misled you
Yet how can a man play the youth when gray hair clings to him?
And how can one resist fate and old age?

I stood at the dwelling's site, where decay had altered
I stood in the courtyard altered by time
its familiar features, as had the dark, rain-streaming clouds.
With acquaintances changed and foreign guards

I question it about its people: what befell them?
I asked about his people, what befell them
But can blackened, crouching stones answer questions?
Does inquiry return shouted down, muzzled?

May Manah be watered sevenfold, then Bahla and her sister,
It watered and revived a barren land
and then Izki, by abundant, gently falling rain.
So a resurgent torrent revived the valley

If neighbors of a clan fear dishonor
our protected women remain honored and noble.
Then our neighbors—their might protects the noble

And many a leaning man now stands erect

befell by God's decree—and God is the judge.
By God’s decree brought to pass—God decides all

Swords like doves swooping down to take the grain

we were—by God's House—fewer than they in number,
We and God’s House were facing them: our band
in men and horses, when the clash was decreed.
Of horse and men when the melee began

When the affair grew dark, I rose, keeping beside me
When the affair took a bad turn I stood aside
Jafla, since none but the Lord of the Throne could protect.
At Jiflah, for none save God protects from harm

I had gathered, but found no promise in what I surveyed.
Yet my ill-omened plan availed me nothing

So I unsheathed my sword, and my trust shielded me—
I bared my sword, my reliance on God alone,
in God—by God, who is the judge.
For He who decides all would decide the outcome

I knew my appointed hour had not yet come
and that, if I did not defend, no hesitant man would defend.
That if I did not defend, none would defend

Whoever does not die in honor dies reproached,
For he who shuns death with honor will surely die
humiliated, with no worthy mourning over him.
Abjectly, and misfortune will be his fate

against me; great perils had not killed my resolve.
Though my resolve the greatest deeds did not match

I scattered them above and below the valley
as dirhams scatter from their two purses.

I leveled my spear, thrusting at an armored man,
I couched my honed spear and gashed his belly
and emptied his saddle of him, to his humiliation.
Emptying his saddle though he tightly gripped

I bore down with my sword on a second mailed foe
and he fell stricken, kissing the earth.

I engaged a third adversary and felled him,
I engaged a third spear and stretched him out
against his will, brave and resisting though he was.
Defiant on the ground, his might brought to naught

I forestalled 'Ukli ibn 'Aziz with a blow,
I caught Ukail son of Aziz with a blow.
and he fell stricken, never to rise again.
He fell dead; no life was left in his body

And a Quda'i tyrant—I sent his nape flying
With my sword I clipped the wings of the braggart
with my sword; his amulets did not protect him from me.
Quda’i, though talismans did not protect him

He lay there convulsing, his death throes heaving,
as vultures tore at him beneath the battle dust.
Torn by the hyenas under the empty sky

They weakened, wearied, scattered in terror, and galloped
So they faltered and flagged and broke and fled
in flight, as ostriches flee, by my life.
As my treasures once fled from me, in panic

Husam swerved from my blade, shrinking in fear,
While Hassam’s sword fled from my sword’s slashing
coming and going, reproaching himself.
Retreating and advancing, blaming his soul

With my sword dripping blood from each edge
and Jafla bore wounds like cupping marks.
And Jiflah ringing with the clash of iron

I bore the same wounds from their thrusts as she, except that I
Bearing their marks but myself made of hardy steel
am hardy when resolutions falter there.
When resolves are hardened there in the fray

Enemies cannot tear down what God raises,
For what destroys the foe is God who exalts us
nor can they ever raise what God tears down.
And they cannot exalt themselves if God destroys us

No blamer nor critic could turn me from you

Though your gallantry should stand by me always?

You deserted us, so the enemies' hand reached far
You left us so the foe’s hand grasped for more
against us, and the once-quiescent adversary rose.
And the hateful aggressor rose against us

Strike fear in their hearts to bow their necks
to you forever; they are deaf and unyielding.
To you forever!—for they are deaf, hard of hearing

a Khuwaykhi charge that scatters breastbones.

فما الأمرُ مسْموعٌ ولا الخوف لازم
If you do not frighten them with might,
If you do not rout them with your might
no command will be heeded, nor will fear endure.
Then neither counsel nor fear of you will stand

فلا بدَّ يَوْماً أنْ يُرى وهو نادمُ
If a man does not begin by subduing his enemy,
If a man does not begin by crushing his foe
he must one day be seen in regret.
One day he will surely regret and lament

So be as I think you to be, for my hopes

And be your triumphant backer—God is gracious!
