    محاهُ البِلى والعاصفاتُ الرَّوامِسُ

    Rayah's dwelling-site at al-Sufayha is effaced;

    decay and the sweeping, obliterating winds have erased it.

    It grew desolate—no, vanished—until it seemed,

    when glimpsed, a faded line upon a sheet of paper.

    فساوَرَني فيهِ من الهمّ هاجسُ

    I dimly discerned it then, and then recognized it;

    and there an anxious thought assailed me.

    وكيفَ يَردُّ الرَّجعَ خُرسٌ دوارسُ

    I kept greeting its traces and ruins;

    but how can mute, effaced remains answer back?

    And a shaggy, split-headed stake, a breached rain-trench,

    and scattered gray ashes and darkened, fading hearthstones—

    بهجرٍ وإذْ لا منظرُ الدَّهرِ عابسُ

    Rayah's, when union's freshness had not worn away

    through estrangement, and the face of time was not grim;

    and when she was a tender maiden, golden at the collarbones,

    surrounded by graceful, lovely, companionable maidens.

    Short-stepped, she swayed as she walked,

    as a ban-tree branch sways and bends.

    Soft and plump, full-hipped, a tender maiden,

    she wore garments of wondrous beauty.

    وأين من الشمس الأكفُّ اللوامس

    Men longed to win union with her;

    but how could grasping hands ever reach the sun?

    He circles her tent in sheer ignorance,

    as thirsty camels circle water at their fifth-day watering.

    As though upon her pointed teeth lay wine of the vine,

    with clear, piercing-cold water mingling in it.

    Nor have I forgotten—no, I have not forgotten—her words one night

    beside the camp's acacias, while the night was pitch-dark:

    فقد غَفَلا عنا رقيبٌ وحارسُ

    “Take your pleasure—may you never be cursed—and enjoy what you see;

    for watcher and guard alike have grown heedless of us.

    For this, though you are unwilling, is our last meeting,

    and after it, O best of kings, there will be no more meetings.”

    And we spent the night—so do not ask what happened between us,

    lest haunting sorrows overwhelm you then.

    When night passed away, she rose in sorrow,

    and her tears gushed upon the bedding.

    I rose, pouring out tears, seeking my dwelling,

    and anxious thoughts had multiplied in my breast from longing.

    Friend, do you see the lightning whose flash I show you,

    like a firebrand waved in a fire-kindler's hand?

    It flashed, gleaming, from the direction of al-Sufayha,

    and kept me sleepless, while the carefree man was drowsy.

    Through it, late at night, I recalled Rayah's smile,

    as she dallied with me when deep darkness enveloped us.

    And many a vast, trackless waste, in whose heart howl

    ravening lions and night-prowling wolves,

    I crossed, my saddle borne at a trot by a massive she-camel,

    bred from mighty camels to traverse the wastes.

    تُدين لنا الصيدُ الكُماة القلامسُ

    And I am indeed of a people of kings, mighty lords;

    proud, armored champions, mighty chiefs, submit to us.

    I am the noblest of earth's kings in lineage and rank,

    and their most lavish giver of food when water is frozen.

    So I sow generosity, that I may reap praise,

    and plant valor, that I may gather glory.

    I charge when the armored champion flees in fear,

    and advance if the bold spearman turns aside.

    I am the sea in bounty, I am the lion in valor,

    when horsemen are named in proud boasting.
