    Is it from recognizing timeworn ruins

    Of Raya at al-Madhanib, then al-Qifal,

    That you wept with love and yearned with longing,

    And the knot of your composure showed signs of loosening?

    Yes, the ruins stirred in me a passion

    That destroyed my gracious patience and endurance.

    ولا كالُحبِّ من داءٍ عُضالِ

    And passion exchanged my tether for another;

    And no incurable illness compares with love.

    Love for you, Raya, has settled in my heart,

    And there it stays, never turning toward departure.

    So I have become as languid as your eyelid,

    Yes, and like your waist in thinness.

    فهلا تسألين بسوءِ حالي

    Raya, I question every caravan about you;

    Why, then, do you not ask about my wretched state?

    فقولي هلْ حلالكِ ما حلالي

    My lawful share from you is torment and dishonor;

    So tell me: is your lawful share the same as mine?

    فكيفَ تُحلّلين سِوى الحلالِ

    It is forbidden, lovely one, to kill someone like me;

    How, then, can you permit what is not lawful?

    I am the lovesick lover, love-enslaved and tormented,

    Even though I am revered among men.

    ولولاه لكنتُ نَعيمَ بالِ

    Love for Raya has penetrated my innermost heart;

    But for it, my mind would be at ease.

    Languid, full-hipped, a tender young maiden,

    Slow of gait and dazzling in beauty.

    She turns the rays of the sun's rim into night,

    And puts the full moon's perfect face to shame.

    She smiles, revealing sweet, gleaming-white teeth,

    Whose array puts strings of pearls to shame.

    As though her saliva were pure, choice wine,

    Blended with sweet, clear, easy-drinking water.

    I rejoice in union with her, and her eyes rejoice

    In union with me, while the ill-wisher suffers misery.

    Through it I was happy for a time when I was

    Easy of mind, blessed with union.

    May that time and its two nights be watered

    By a cloud of ceaseless rain, its waterskin spouts unbound.
