All glory returns to my side,

and the loftiest station claims kinship with me.

And when a noble man is set beside me, however high

his honor, he becomes the basest and lowest.

So when I hold sway, what kind of king is Caesar?

And when I am named, what is crowned Tubbaʿ?

My great ancestral tree springs from the stock of God's Hud,

below whose roots lie the rising stars.

I am the mine of noble virtues and praiseworthy qualities,

and the fountainhead of excellence and deep-rooted glory.

    وإذا نهبتُ فكلُّ ربعٍ بَلقعُ

    So when I give, every barren tract grows fertile;

and when I plunder, every dwelling-place lies desolate.

And when the striving of the world's kings lags

short of a rank, I am swift and hasten ahead.

    وعليَّ رايةُ كل حمدٍ تُرفعُ

    So every clan of glory traces its descent to me;

and above me the banner of every praise is raised.

And whenever kings race me toward the heights,

I outstrip them, and they fall short, exhausted and limping.

So when the ancestral roots of a people's kings are tainted

by admixture, my lineage shines resplendent.

Ancestral honor like pure gold, and a lineage

purer than silver, and more radiant.

I am the best who ever wore the sword-baldric, and the best who

rode noble steeds, and the one to whom recourse is made.

I scatter wealth in gathering praise,

and gather praise by giving away inherited riches.

I listen to the pleas of bounty-seekers, and never have I

    heeded reproach for bestowing gifts.

So I am the raincloud when clouds have changed

their gentle ways: my rain never ceases.

And I am death when doom bares

its shin, and the day is dust-dark and blackened,

and horses neigh, and horsemen proclaim their lineages,

and bright blades flash, and spearheads are leveled.

And many an armored warrior, valiant, stained

with horsemen's blood, ruthless and unafraid,

a buyer of pure wine, generous with all he possessed

in pursuit of praise, sparing no effort and never abasing himself—

I turbaned him with the edge of a keen, bright sword,

flashing like lightning beneath a cloud's shade.

So I left him meat for beasts, swathed

in blood, the hungry wolves taking turns at him.

The barren, dark-hued eagles tread his torn remains,

and turn their faces from him, veiling themselves.

And many a battalion filling open space I held in check,

though it was defiant, not to be restrained.

And many a bristling, clashing host surged as though

it were a brimming sea stirred by storms.

I churned its depths and waded through its surge

with my sword; I neither feared nor quailed.

And how many a poor man came to my dwelling seeking bounty,

then turned away wealthy and well supplied!

And many a milk-starved man whose clan's milch stock was consumed

by time, which betrays and cheats the noblest—

I ended his craving for milk with full-grown camels:

a hundred, that cramped the widest open plain.

And noble, well-kept horses I led out,

as recompense for praise, bounding against their reins.

I revived dead generosity with bounty, just as

Joshua turned the sun back from its setting.

I am keener and more cutting in resolve than a sharp sword

in battle, though it cuts more keenly than death.

And my gifts fill the lands, and before my ambition

the blazing stars bow and submit.

Ask about me, to be told of the Yemeni

in whom all noble virtues and praiseworthy qualities are gathered.

A free giver of kindness, awe-inspiring, outstanding

in glory, yet a free giver in generosity.

A lion before whom lions bow in awe,

and a death from whom death itself recoils.

If I reached for Yadhbul or touched its hump

with resolve, Yadhbul would soon split apart.

Or if the first stirrings of my might touched Radwa,

they would cleave its boulders, and its soft white stones would melt.

And when spearheads have come to resemble ribs,

or ribs resemble them in their curvature,

and the bright swords are notched, yet still

thick necks are lopped and severed by them,

you find me like a lion charging in fury

on a summit where utter desolation reigns.

And I battle the noble champion in his own fashion,

and humble him, though he is mighty and awe-inspiring.

Ask about me: my enemies will tell you that I

am like time, lowering and raising whomever I will.

And I harm some peoples and benefit others

out of nobility—who like me can harm and help?

    وأقود تُبَّعَ في الفَخَارِ فيثبَعُ

    I confront Antar in battle's tumult, and he shrinks back;

and I lead Tubbaʿ in glory, and he follows.

And I safeguard my honor, spending to protect it

my wealth, so it is neither breached nor cracked.

And I have indeed drunk a beauteous, choice wine,

pure wine, brightened with water from night-traveling clouds.

    Yellow as molten gold—bewildered

are descriptions of it; they limp behind.

So its starry bubbles, and the wine itself, seem

pearls studded upon a monarch's crown.

I shared it with lords of Yaʿrub's noblest stock,

and shy maidens before whom the awe-inspiring warrior bows.

So in my exhilaration, I gave away all my hands possessed,

and often I grew sober, yet my bounty never ceased.

And many a nursling of sovereignty whose fledglings I sent flying

with my sword, while bright, keen blades flashed.

with a penetrating blade that cleaves and cuts iron.

So he fell upon his bare brow, sprawling,

like a wild ass pawing the earth and stretching its limbs.

So I left him felled beneath the swirling dust,

the four winds shrouding him in drifting dust.

Hold back, tyrant kings, for I

am like death: by my life, there is no warding it off.

What you sow, you shall soon reap,

and a man soon reaps whatever he sows.
