فلمso did not أدرِI know منfrom بعدafter النَّوىthe separation أينwhere حلّتshe settled
The riding camels departed from us bearing Mudhiyah.
After the parting, I did not know where she had settled.
أحلَّتْdid she settle جنوباًsouthward فالحُبيلthen at al-Hubayl أمor انتحتْdid she make for
أباطحَthe gravelly valleys of عزّʿIzz فالحُوىthen al-Huwa فالحُويّةِthen al-Huwayyah
Did she settle southward, then at al-Hubayl, or make for
The gravelly valleys of ʿIzz, then al-Huwa, then al-Huwayyah?

لأسقَمَthat I should sicken حتىuntil أزمَعَتْshe resolved to leave فتولَّتِand departed
She turned away and left me sick; I would not
Have sickened until she resolved to leave and departed.
تصدَّتْshe presented herself لقتليto kill me بالتَّصديby showing herself تعمداًdeliberately
فلماthen when رأتshe saw أنthat قدalready أصابتهshe had achieved it صدَّتِshe turned away
She deliberately sought to kill me by showing herself;
Then, when she saw she had achieved it, she turned away.

رَدَاحٌfull-hipped مَيودswaying القدِّof figure أنَّىhowever تَثنَّتِshe bends
Slender-waisted, soft beneath her twin sashes, a tender young beauty,
Full-hipped, her figure swaying however she bends.
تريكَshe shows you اهتزازَthe quivering of الرُّمحِa spear إنif هيshe أقبلتapproaches
تميسُshe sways ودعصَand a mound of الرملsand إنif هيshe ولَّتِturns away
She shows you a spear's quivering when she approaches,
Swaying—and a mound of sand when she turns away.

And she gazes with the eyes of a noble wild cow, mother of a calf,
Who lost him when she feared for him, and lowed plaintively.
أدْقَّmade slender إِلهيmy God خَلقَهاher form وأجَلّهُand made it full
فدقَّتso she grew slender كماas شاءwilled الإِلهُGod وجلَّتِand grew full
My God made her form both slender and full;
So she grew slender and full, as God willed.

As though her front teeth, when slumber beguiled her,
Had been moistened anew with north-wind-cooled wine from ʿAnah.
أطارتshe sent flying فؤاديmy heart إذwhen أطارَsent flying قِناعَهاher veil
نَسيمُa breeze صُباًof the east wind منfrom مطلعِthe rising place of الشمسِthe sun هبَّتthat blew
She sent my heart flying when her veil was sent flying
By an east-wind breeze blowing from the sunrise.
فماسَتْso she swayed حياءًbashfully حينwhen حُمّwas decreed سُفورُهاher unveiling
عليناbefore us حَياءًbashfully فانثنتْthen she bent فارجحَّنتِthen she swayed heavily
She swayed bashfully when her unveiling was decreed
Before us; bashfully she bent and swayed heavily.
فظلْتُso I remained كأنيas though I were شاربٌa drinker of صَرخديةَSarkhad wine

I remained as though a drinker of Sarkhad wine,
Pure first-run wine, mingled with sweet, flowing water.
وموذيةٌand Mudhiyah أوْضاthe most radiant of الملائحthe beauties طلَعةَin countenance
وأحمدُهاand their most praiseworthy طبعاًin disposition إِذاwhen الغيدُthe graceful beauties ذُمَّتِare disparaged
And Mudhiyah is the most radiant-faced of beauties,
And their most praiseworthy in nature when graceful beauties are disparaged.

أقرَّit would admit اختياراًwillingly أنهthat it was وردُa rose of جنةِParadise
Smooth-cheeked—if the rose saw her cheek,
It would willingly admit her cheek was a rose of Paradise.

إذاwhen هيَshe منfrom تحتbeneath القِناعthe veil تجلَّتِrevealed herself
As though the sun's radiance lay beneath her veil,
When she revealed herself from beneath the veil.

فأجفانهاand her eyelids المرضىlanguid هُريقتwas shed فطلُتand went unavenged
Playful—the blood of champions lies in her cheeks;
And her eyelids are languid; that blood was shed and left unavenged.
كأنَّas though علىupon لبَّاتِهاher upper breast جمرَthe embers of مُصطلٍsomeone warming himself

As though upon her breast lay the embers of someone warming himself,
Scattered by the east wind in the darkness.
تجنّتshe found fault unjustly علىwith مَهيوبهاthe one she held in awe كيto تُريعَهfrighten him
وحُقَّand it is fitting لمهضومِfor one slender الحشاof waist لوif تجنَّتِshe finds fault unjustly
She found fault unjustly with the man she held in awe, to frighten him;
And a slender-waisted beauty has the right to such caprice.

At one like her the self-possessed man gazes with longing,
When she stands tall in Atḥamī attire.
تمنيَّتُI wished أنthat أبقىI should remain هَيوماًmadly lovesick بحّبهاwith love for her
فياربso, O Lord بلّغlet attain مُنيتيmy longing ماwhat تمنَّتِit has wished for
I wished to remain distraught with love for her;
So, Lord, let my longing attain what it has longed for.
