Ah, which of these traces of dwellings, now become

like the Jews' script at the heads of letters,

belong to Raya at al-Atwa'? Their freshness was worn away

by the fronts of rainclouds and the racing of scudding clouds.

Nothing of them remains but a breached encircling ditch,

and a lone, ragged peg, bare at the campsite,

and three pitch-black stones, fixed in place,

upon a cold ash-bed, ashen in color and faded.

May a towering cloud water you and drench you this morning,

a raincloud that spends the morning between steady rain and torrents.

O dwelling in the wilderness, we greet you: fare well!

But can dwellings laid waste ever fare well?

I asked you: has Raya greeted you just as

I greet you—or have you found no answer for a questioner?

Has the tender, sweet-voiced maiden, since our time together,

dwelt in you, O home of shy, tall and lovely maidens?

Did not beautiful women trail their hems within you?

Were you not peopled by fair, noble ladies?

Noble ladies from the high lineages of Unayn and Ya'rub,

slender in figure, their anklets filled by ample flesh.

Dwellings of noble men, a planting-place for a slender spear,

a haunt of guests, a course for neighing steeds:

    long-limbed horses of al-Darih's and Dahis's lines,

handsome of face, their flanks drawn taut.

You see every long-necked, slender mare,

with pointed ears and lofty withers,

and every stallion striking the earth with power,

with a black hoof that strikes fire from the rocks.

I tell my two slaves, who have taken charge of

caring for my horses and preparing their feed:

Keep honoring Jafla, for she is

the very choicest of high-bred, unfettered horses.

And do not leave her without a blanket, for she is

indeed my fortress when ranks of cavalry squadrons arrive,

and the millstone of renewed war turns upon its pivot,

and every coward shrinks away from its fires.

Then she repays me for what I have done,

when a man fails to repay a benefactor's kindness.

Indeed, she is the noblest of swift steeds in lineage

and in deeds; I find no rival to her.

and with her I shroud the hearts of massed armies in fear.

    Darihi-bred, Sabhi-bred, and Lahiqi-bred,

the treasure of a noble lord, a mighty king.

And one day, along the cord of iron, I brought her up against

the points of tall lances and sharp-cutting blades.

I hurled her breast against the edges of sharpened swords,

and she returned with a spatter washing both her flanks.

When men filled her with their spears in stabbing thrusts,

she stood firm, with a steadfast heart that never swerved.

I shed, though I had not reached thirty years,

my enemies' blood in the darkness of battle-dust.

So how will it be when I approach or reach that age,

and grow strong of arm and broad of shoulder?

I left an Ukli man, his women lamenting

over him with the lament of mothers bereaved of their children.

And the ill-starred Quda'i lay slain,

prey for the eagles of battle and young hyenas.

Had I lived in the time of Amr and Amir,

I would have left peoples dumbfounded by those early feats.

    ودعْ عنك تذكارَ الوغى والطوائلِ

    So tell Husam: return to peace, and you will be safe;

and put aside memories of battle and blood-feuds.

For war's road is rugged, a place where one loses the way,

bringing whoever seeks it to no worthwhile end.

unleashing war achieves is the severing of joints.

And never suppose war to be play and pleasure,

and union with a nubile maiden in the courtyard of the dwellings.

For war separates all sons of one father,

and brings death to souls by spears and blades.

It wiped out the sons of Dhubyan in the clash of Dahis

with Abs, leaving them slain and slayers.

So do not be ignorant of loathsome war,

for your valiant brother is not ignorant of it.

Nor is your father's noble son ever abject

in war, nor wavering in resolve or hanging back.

the valiant raiders, the finest horsemen of battle.

jealous of my honor, and my venom works swiftly in the vital parts.

And how many an armored brave man I have killed,

lofty in his edifice of glory, awe-inspiring and valiant.

And how many a poet has presented me his verse,

and returned with garments, horses, and a herd of camels.

And a seeker of aid, surrounded by cavalry and spears,

I raised up, though he was already food for a devourer.

If I bestow bounty, what is the generous son of Barmak beside me?

And if I enter war, what is Kulayb son of Wa'il beside me?
