Raya, O lady of the tent and the howdah,

and mistress of the necklace and wearer of the armlet,

and of coy charm and a smooth, radiant forehead,

and of the lovely, finely tapered eyebrow,

and of the cheek and the large, dark, kohl-rimmed eye—

is there a glance for a distraught lover,

far from his family, on a distant path,

who has found no escape from love's decree?

Why did you not recall our pledge at Man‘ij,

while we were among the ghada trees and ‘arfaj shrubs,

in a life of ease and gentle bliss,

paying no heed to a provoking reproacher?

Indeed, you unsheathed the sword of a dark eyelid

against a noble, awe-inspiring, crowned hero,

a support for the forsaken, a refuge for those seeking shelter,

who crosses the wastes on swift-striding she-camels,

    Shadhani camels, fleet and quick-trotting,

to see you, O oryx of the howdah.

I asked the Possessor of the Throne, who has never been constrained,

the reliever of every anguish still unrelieved,

to let me attain in love what I hope for:

    kissing Raya's crimson-flushed cheek,

and sipping the moisture of her mouth with its spaced teeth.

Nay, many a vast, level, untraveled desert

    I crossed on a sturdy, swift she-camel,

fleet, bounding with a reckless, headlong rush,

as though my saddle sat atop a male ostrich,

or a scarred wild ass, stout of limb,

    أمَّ مَتى تمعجُ سَيراً يمعّجِ

    rushing headlong after a long-bodied she-ass;

he pursued her: whenever she swerves in her gait, he swerves.

And many a lion clad in mail, fully armed,

bold of heart, resolute and bright-browed,

I turbaned him with a curved sword's edge—

how many skulls of dust-raising lions it has split!
