عفا من آل فاطمة الجواء

The gusts from Fatima's folk blew gently,

غشيت ديارا بالنقيع فثهمد

I dwelled in lands struck by tribulation

ثوى برزاء خير فتى أناس

He settled in Ruzaa, the best of men,

لعمرك والخطوب مغيرات

By the life of you, calamities change

شطت أميمة بعدما صقبت

Umayma went on after she had said farewell,

قف بالديار التي لم يعفها القدم

Stand in the dwellings not worn by time,

لمن طلل برامة لا يريم

For one whose abode at Ramah does not fall into decay

ولا تكثر على ذي الضغن عتبا

Reproach not the lowly, nor remind of sin,

فيم لحت إن لومها ذعر

Why did she burden me, as if with blame like needles,

إن الخليط أجد البين فانفرقا

The parting has intensified the separation, so we parted ways

وقالت أم كعب لا تزرني

And Um Kab's mother said, do not blame me

ولولا أن ينال أبا طريف

And were it not for fear that Abu Tarif

لم أر سوقة كابني سنان

I did not see a companion like the two sons of Sinan,

لسلمى بشرقي القنان منازل

My beloved has dwellings in eastern Salma

رأيت بني آل امرئ القيس أصفقوا

I saw the sons of Imru' al-Qais clap at us

رأت رجلاً لاقى من العيش غبطة

She saw a man who found happiness in life

هل في تذكر أيام الصبا فند

Is there any joy in remembering the days of youth,

إن الرزية لا رزية مثلها

Indeed woe unfathomable, forsooth quite unmatchable,

أمن آل ليلى عرفت الطلولا

Do you know the twilights of Layla's clan,

وبلدة لا ترام خائفة

In a town unafraid though fearful,

مرج الدين فأعددت له

Marij of ad-Din, so I prepared for him

تبين خليلي هل ترى من ظعائن

My friend, do you see any enemies

لقد أورث العبسي مجدا مؤثلا

The gloomy one left behind enduring glory,

إني لتعديني على الهم جسرة

My heart is lifted above cares

ألا أبلغ لديك بني سبيع

Deliver for me, O messenger, to the clan of Subei’

من يتجرم لي المناطق ظالما

Whoever aggresses against me in ignorance

أعن كل أخدان وإلف ولذة

I seek solace from every beloved and intimate friend,

صحا القلب عن سلمى وقد كاد لا يسلو

My heart recovered from Salma though it had almost perished

أخبرت أن أبا الحويرث قد

I was told that Abu Al-Huwayrith had

ألا أبلغ لديك بني تميم

Convey to the clan of Tamim that rumors may come to you

صرمت جديد حبالها أسماء

Asma has cast anew the ropes of her tent

أبلغ بني نوفل عني فقد بلغوا

Convey to the people of Nawfal from me, for they have attained

كم للمنازل من عام ومن زمن

For how many years have homes stood, and what times

أثويت أم أجمعت أنك غادي

Have you resolved to leave or decided that you are departing,

متى تذكر ديار بني سحيم

When will the abodes of Banu Suhaym be remembered

وصاحب كاره الإدلاج قلت له

To a friend who disliked prolixity I said,

أمن أم أوفى دمنة لم تكلم

صحا القلب عن سلمى وأقصر باطله

سترحل بالمطي قصائدي

رأت رجلاً لاقى من العيش غبطة

غدت عذالتاي فقلت مهلاً

بان الخليط ولم يأووا لمن تركوا

تعلم أن شر الناس حي

أبلغ لديك بني الصيداء كلهم

ولقد نهيتكم وقلت لكم

لمن الديار بقنة الحجر

ألا ليت شعري هل يرى الناس ما أرى

لمن الديار غشيتها بالفدفد

أبت ذكر من حب ليلى تعودني

هل تبلغني إلى الأخيار ناجية

لقد لحقت بأولى الخيل تحملني

ويوم تلافيت الصبا أن يفوتني

أرادت جوازاً بالرسيس فصدها
