1. The gloomy one left behind enduring glory,
And praise that remains among the praises.

2. The tears of a dear brother at his grave’s stones—
No grave before it was so tearfully praised.

3. From him his people got gifts and garments.
Yet many a man strives for another still seated.

4. The meadows of death allow no drawing back.
A thirsty one awaits, like another who came to drink.

5. Sickness, weakness, misery, and death
And no absent one but is like another present.

6. Had he been living, speaking privately, you’d have found him
From death, in his guards, scarcely drawing back.

7. Did not kinsmen hinder death’s Lord from him
When he had elegant wealth constantly increasing?

8. See you not that after people pass away
Their tales remain while man himself is not everlasting?
