1. The gusts from Fatima's folk blew gently,
Bringing calm, then broth, then succor.

2. Then came the valiant one with flowing locks,
Wind swept his honor after you and the heavens.

3. The peak, the distance as though Khnas' doe
Fill their bellies with foliage in the groves.

4. He sniffs its lightning and drizzles on the sand dunes
Of the south, on their severe brows.

5. When the clan of Layla bore it
Enmity flowed between me and them.

6. It flowed smoothly so I said to it: grant
Safe passage though laden, when shall we meet?

7. Its people bore it and so did appear
In the footsteps of those honorable folk.

8. As though the ruins there
Are caravans hiding in their circles.

9. I sought it though all things end
If persistence is prolonged, endings come.

10. They shared its moons and fawns’ necks
And gazelles frolicked in them.

11. As for what was strung on its necklace
It is from human veins its pasture is the wild.

12. As for the two ear-drops they are from a doe
And the pearls have luster and purity.

13. Sever its ties as she severed them
And avoid meeting her with enmity.

14. No secret gathering for its noble-one
Nor privacy diminished its glory.

15. As though the travel supplies upon it
Above the saddle-cloth murmur in the dark.

16. Deafening the large-eared one, leaning
Silently towards it, murmuring.

17. Is it this or insult to the cheek brings
Aversion upon it from its grace?

18. It squatted squarely until dusk faded
And illumination parted from it.

19. It rose to the jars and every valley
Summoned it from pasture and the wild.

20. He brought it to springs in Saniyya
Where it found no water within them.

21. He stirred goats with it, they bleated
As buckets surrendered themselves to sprinkling.

22. Its coming is unlike a dear one's coming
Nor does its deliverance resemble salvation.

23. And if they inclined to an old tent its
Partitions creak, the ropes are taut.

24. Its wine flows down its brows
And its face lacks any mask.

25. It chirps between pure crevices
Unclouded by turbidity.

26. When they contend, its age and intellect
Make it superior over them.

27. As though its foal at every dawn
Upon al-Yam'ouda wishes for rain.

28. It came bare like a captive man
Without garb upon the summit.

29. As though its lightning is a bare-flanked steed
Whose bridle and water are manifest.

30. It is not neglectful of it though the shepherd
Is distracted, it guards its flock.

31. I came upon a noble and generous company
Seeking what we desire.

32. They have ease, carpets, and musk
Their skins are perfumed with water.

33. They pass the mugs while song
Meanders among the slain.

34. It wandered among the dead who though struck
Their souls were not drained of blood.

35. I know not, will know, are they the clan
Of Hissan or are they women?

36. If they say adorned women
Then the right of the chaste is gifts.

37. Or the clan of Masad will say
We are an innocent tribe.

38. Or they will say we have kept our oath
And our ways are faithfulness.

39. Or they will say we refused
And refusing duty is most contemptible.

40. Truth's place is thus threefold:
Oath, abandonment, or withdrawal.

41. That is the place of every right—
Three, all for you, remedies.

42. You are not blamed for what you forbid
Nor give but when you desire.

43. A witnessing neighbor, justice upon you,
And guarantors are equal to creditors.

44. To which two neighbors did you assign him?
Only fulfillment suited you.

45. A neighbor traveled trusting in you
Fear and hope came to him.

46. He dwelt honored until summer called him
And winter had gone.

47. You guaranteed his wealth—collectively
Its loss was upon you as was its growth.

48. Had it not been that humiliation would strike Abu Turaif
From a possessive or adhesive one,

49. The houses of Bani Ulaim would be visited
By vessels filled with words.

50. Our oaths from us and you will be gathered
By a pact the blood-ties nourish.

51. There will come to the clan of Hissan wherever they were
From examples lasting glory.

52. I saw no band prouder of a gift
Nor a house's neighbor held greater in honor.

53. A house's neighbor and its caller
In front of the tribe their pact is equal.

54. The martyrs with you refused from Ma'd
There is no concealment for its creeping.

55. It churns venom—though fresh
It sprouted beneath the armpit a disease.

56. You spat some out yet left therein
Though you could have cured it if you wished.

57. If I met you and we gathered
Every complainant would have her meeting.

58. I would absolve those who wash their hair of it
Though scratching may cure scabies.

59. Wait, O clan of Abdullah, count
Missteps with no harm can touch.

60. Show us a tradition with no fault
Making equal between us the level ground.

61. If you leave the level ground no pact remains between
The clan of Hissan and I.

62. Severance will remain between us
A people evil to themselves.

63. Your fire will spark embers
And for you in every assembly a banner will rise.
