إذا لم تطب في طيبة عند طيب
If you find no pleasure in Tibah near someone pleasant
وكيف أؤدي شكر من إن شكرته
Roses are red, violets are blue
يا حسن بيت الله وهو مجرد
O beauty of God's house though bare it be
ألا يا ابن عم المصطفى وحبيبه
O cousin of Al-Mustafa and his beloved,
وأما ما سواه من الجريد
And as for what else there is besides it
رجوعا إلى المولى فهذا زمانه
Return to the Lord, for this is His time
فيا فوز المصاب من الإلاه
Roses are red, violets are blue
يا يارقا لاح من قبا سحرا
O dawn gleaming from the east at daybreak
صلاة سلام ثم حمد شهادة
A prayer, a greeting, then praise and testimony
ولست بأهل أن أجاز فكيف أن
I am not worthy to be rewarded, so how could
وتسعفه غر القوافي لأنه
His rhymes are fuel for rousing fires
يا من به طيبة طابت حلى وعلا
O you whose grace makes sweetness sweet and nobility noble
لا بدع إن وافى بغيث صيب
When rain brings abundant showers
وسار إلى السويس ولي فؤاد
He marched to Suez with a heart
يا رب يا رب إني مسني الضرر
O Lord, O Lord, harm has afflicted me
يا مقلتي هذا المقام الأكبر
This is the greatest abode
والجيش رواه من دعوته قدح
The army prevented him from his call
ونظفر في أم القرى بمنى القرى
Where Mecca's splendors are revealed
وعشية كم عيشت من ناس
And many an eve how you gave life to people
تبدت في قطيع كالصوار
A girl appeared among a flock like arrows
يا إلهي قد أتى الملتزما
O my God, the obligated one has come
دوام لحج طول غزو تواضع
A time for hajj, the length of a ghazu is humility
من لم يغص في لجة القاموس لم
Who has not plunged into the sea of the dictionary
إلى أن بدا وجه الصباح كأنه
Until the face of morning appeared as though it were
ألا في سبيل الله ضاعت قصيدتي
Alas, for the cause of God my poem is lost
لئن ملت عني أو مللت مودتي
Even if you are weary of me or tired of my affection
وكيف يكون محجورا عليه
How can He be restricted
قل لابن ملجم الملجم نيرانا
Say to Ibn Muljam, who ignited fires,
طوبى لمن طاف بالبيت العتيق وقد
Blessed is he who circles the ancient house
فهناك يحلو المدح دون تردد
And my repetition and echoing sound sweet
وجئت بكل ما أعيى وأعوز
I came with all I was lacking and in need
ولفظ القنوت اعدد معانيه تجد
The words of supplication, count their meanings, you will find
ولي إليك انتسابا بتسميتي
I claim kinship to you in naming myself
وبالكعبة الغراء عن كل كاعب
By the noble Ka'ba, from all false friends
والدهر هد الظهر بالحدثان
Time has bowed the back with sorrows
يا سائقا غنى النياق وزمزما
O driver, sing praises to the camel litters
حصلت على المجد والسؤدد
I attained glory and eminence,
سافر إلى نيل المعزة
Travel to gain honorable livelihood, for in travel lies success.
صفا القلب مني إذ وقفت على الصفا
My heart became pure when I stood at Safa
أصبية ثم أصب ثم صبيان
A little boy, then boys, then more little boys
حصلت على الذخائر والأماني
You have gained treasures and wishes
وودعتهم والعين تهمل كالعين
I bid them farewell while my eyes overflow like springs
مباحث لو فوق النحور تجسدت
If the topics of discussion were embodied above the rapids
لقد فزنا ولله الثناء
We have succeeded, and praise be to God,
الله أكبر كم لهذا المصطفى
How great is Allah, and countless are the miracles
وكل ما قد طلبنا فاقضه عجلا
Grant all that we have asked, O Lord, with haste,
إلا أثابهم بما لا يخطر
Except He will reward them with what no one could imagine,
وكيف أبالي أو أحدث بالي
How can I speak or chatter idly,
يوما بفاس فوي مكناسة زمنا
Once in Fez, once in Meknes days gone by
ترنم الطير على غصن بان
The birds chirped on the branches of the banana tree
ومما سلاني عن هواهم وصدني
They asked me of their love, and I rebuffed them,
هذه روضة الرسول فدعني
This is the garden of the Prophet, so let me
ففيها علامات القبول لأنها
For in it are signs of acceptance, because
علم إلى حلم إلى كرم إلى
Knowledge leads to dream leads to generosity leads
إذا شئت أن تلقى عدوك راغما
If you want to overpower your enemy,
وسألت الإله مولاي أن
I asked my Lord, my Master, to protect
بدا لك الحق فاقطع ظهر بيداء
The truth has become clear, so traverse the back of the white desert,
ووافيت ما بين يالظهيرة والعصر
I reached the tomb of the Sheikh of mystics, Abu Bakr,
إليك ابن عباس جميع وسائر
To you, O son of Abbas, all are bound and traveling,
أدام الله رفقته وأبقى
May God prolong his companionship and keep
فهناك يدنو الهنا والسرور
For there is joy and gladness drawing near,
عشقت ولا أقول بمن لأني
I loved, but I won't say whom, for I fear
حمانا من مخوف الدهر بيت
A shelter that protects us from the fears of fate
أأحمد في مغناك قد ظلت أحمد
Do I continue praising you in my poems, Ahmad?
عين ماض بها عيون مواض
Eyes of a past with eyes of passing time
يا عباد الله بلو الرحما
O servants of God, be kind to your fellow man
وقالوا إذا ما أتيت لسروال
They said, when you come to Sirwa
فالحمد لله حمدا لا نفاد له
So praise be to Allah, praise without end,
فكم من نعمة في طي نقمه
How many blessings are in the folds of wrath
قصدتكم رجال الله أسعى
I seek you, O men of God, hastening,
خلياني من حاسد أو شاني
Leave me be, envious or malicious one
واجبره من كل كسر واردردن عليه
Oblige him from every wound that has afflicted me, and respond to me
ما إن يعيبك فقد الحلي والحلل
It is no fault of yours if you lack jewelry and finery,
أرسلت مقلتي دموعا غزارا
My tears streamed copiously
فمن جاء مشتاقا إليه أخا وجد
Whoever comes longing for it, a brother finds
حططنا بمعنى خالد بن سنان
We camped with the eternal meaning of Khalid ibn Sinan
وسل له الله في غفران زلته
Pray to Allah for forgiveness of his slip,
نزلنا حماك أبا حسن
كعبتنا قد أصبحت
فليقتف الآثار من رام العلا
فنسأل مولانا كما قدر البينا
فيا ليته لو رد منها قصيدة
قباب قباء تلكم أم قبا سلع
وإن سلموا من آفة في طريقهم
قسما بمكة والحطيم وزمزم
من قال آمين أبقى الله مهجته
وأية قربة أعلى وأغلى
فلا تعدلوها أو تعجبوا من مقالها
نسأل رحم الراحم الرحمان
أعقبة جبنا أجبلا وعقابا
نودعكم ونودع اللب والقلبا
اسمع حديث الهوى يا من أخاطبه
هذي أباطح مكة حولي وما
قد عرفنا الخيرات في عرفات
لاح الصباح ولألأ المصباح
لما تستر إذ رآني مقبلا
يا جاهلا نور الصحاح ومعرضا
ألا ليت شعري هل أرى البيت معلما
هديت إلى الصراط المستقيم
بلغنا المنى لما بلغنا إلى منى
وسرت وقلبي محرق بلظى النوى
بادر إلى كتب الأمالي جاهدا
وكم له من أحاديث محبرة
أرجاؤها طبق المنى وهواؤها
وأنى له علم بذاك وقد غدا
