1. Travel to gain honorable livelihood, for in travel lies success.
Set out to attain glory, O you who set out for sublime goals.

2. Know that staying put in homelands invites boredom,
And bequeaths to temperaments and bodies all kinds of harm.

3. Have you not seen how lengthy stays make optimists morose?
If the full moon stayed put in a place, it would not have shone.

4. If pearls were left at the bottom of the sea, they would have no pride.
Dust is dirt in mines, though finest when outside.

5. Wood is mere timber to forest trees, but finest when cut down.
Barren iron, buried underground, is useless until brought forth.

6. Many examples have spread among people with these lessons.
They revealed wonders, in prose and verse, from start to finish.

7. Most journeys reveal their faces, once you embark.
So persist in traveling through all conditions, you will find ease.

8. Know that distance from a homeland you once inhabited,
And being foreign in the East, shining in the West, if you have insight,

9. Is best. Make all people your family, and all land a mere inn.
Choose no desert folk over urban, but be with whoever appears.

10. Nomads have honor, refinement and elegance are urban.
When nomadic, every towering pride will settle in you,

11. And when urban, every refined grace will find repose in you.
Weep not for people departed, nor home nor faded tracings.

12. People altogether are your familiars, and all the earth your abode.
When you find honor and pleasant living, stay and prosper.

13. When you see the opposite and hidden discord, leave and distance.
Make your wares devotion, among those hidden and those visible.

14. If you are pious towards God, you win every stored treasure.
