- أاحبابنا بالرغم مني فراقكمO our beloved ones, parting from you is against my will.

- ألا من مبلغ لعل الجحودAh, who will convey—perhaps to the ungrateful one—
- ألفت البكا في القرب منكم وفي النوىI have grown accustomed to weeping, both near you and apart from you.
- إلى الله أشكو جور دهر معاندTo God I complain of the tyranny of an unyielding age.
- إلى كم فؤادي بالتفرق ذا جرحHow long must my heart, through separation, remain wounded?
- آنس اللَه وحشتي بكتابGod soothed my loneliness with a letter
- أيا رب قد أحسنت عودا وبدأةO Lord, You have shown kindness anew and from the outset,
- أيا رب كم ذا البين قلبي يجرحO Lord, how often this separation wounds my heart!
- أيا من لا يضاف إليه ثانO you who have no equal,
- أيوحشني الزمان وأنت أنسيCan time make me lonely when you are my solace?
- بروحي التي أسعى اليها بمهجتيMy soul for her whom I seek with my heart's blood,
- بعثت لنا من سحر مقلتك الوسنىFrom the enchantment of your drowsy eye, you sent us
- بقلبي حديث منك إني خبأتهIn my heart is a message from you that I have kept hidden.
- بيني وبين النوى دخل فان صدعتBetween me and separation lies discord; if it has shattered
- تجافى النوم بعدك عن عيونيSleep has shunned my eyes in your absence.
- ترى تسمح الدنيا ويسعدني القدرI wonder: will the world relent and fate make me happy,
- تؤملنا النفس النجية فرجةThe soul, our intimate confidante, holds out hope of relief;
- جد الضنا ويد الأشواق تلعب بيMy wasting sickness grew grave, while the hand of longings toys with me.
- حتام تطرف طرف عيني بالبكاHow long will you treat my gaze to tears?
- خليلي سيرا واربعا بالمناهلMy two friends, journey on and halt at the watering places,
- خليلي عوجا بي على مسقط اللواMy two friends, turn aside with me at the foot of al-Liwa—
- دع الدمع يفني الجفن ليلة ودعواLet tears consume the eyelid on the night they bade farewell.
- دعا مقلتي تبكي دماً ودعانيLeave my eye to weep blood, and leave me;
- ذكرت صبابتي من بعد حينI recalled my ardent longing after a while.
- رعى الله ساعات تجلى بها الرضىMay God cherish the hours in which contentment shone forth;
- سلام كما فاح العبير لناسمA greeting, like perfume wafting on a breeze,
- سئمت حياتي من كرور المصائبI have grown weary of my life because of recurring calamities,
- شحطنا وما بالدار نأي ولا شحطWe have grown distant, though the dwelling holds neither distance nor remoteness.
- شرحت لوجدي في محبتكم صدراI opened my breast to my yearning in loving you,
- على من لا أسميه السلامPeace be upon the one I do not name.
- عليك من ذاك الحمى يا رسولUpon you, from that sanctuary, O messenger,
- فإن يك قدر قد عاق عن وطرSo if a decree of fate has barred the way to a desire,
- فيا لها بلوة جلى ومازلةOh, what a mighty affliction and calamity!
- قد صفا ماء النعيمThe water of bliss has grown clear
- قفوا بالناجيات على زرودHalt with the swift she-camels at Zarud;
- قلوبنا مودوعة عندكمOur hearts are entrusted to you,
