يريد ضميري من لساني صفاتها

وهيهات ان يرضى ضميري لسانيا

My inner self asks my tongue to speak of her qualities;

Yet never will my inner self be satisfied with my tongue.

أحاذرُ من ذكري عليها هوانها

وإن كنت أرضي في هواها هوانيا

I fear the humiliation my mentioning her might bring upon her,

Though in my love for her I accept my own humiliation.

أأذكرها جهراً وسري يصونها

وأكتمها وجداً وأشكو أمانيا

Shall I mention her aloud, while my secret protects her,

and conceal her out of yearning, and lament my wishes?

أبيت الهوى إن بحتُ بالسر في الهوى

سواءٌ أطاع القلبُ أم قد عصانيا

I renounce love if I divulge the secret of love,

whether the heart has obeyed or has defied me.

فحسبي حديث النفس عمن أحبه

وشرحي لأفكاري هواها هوانيا

So speaking to myself of the one I love is enough for me;

And explaining my love for her to my thoughts is my humiliation.

هنيئاً لعينيكِ المنامُ فانني

أساهر من شوقي إليكِ اللياليا

May sleep be sweet to your eyes, for I

keep vigil through the nights out of longing for you.
