لما شئت تهوى فهي تلهو وتطرب

Command the soul in whatever you wish, as long as you wish; indeed, it

My spirit roams wherever it wills, wherever it wills, for

Yearns for what you wish, and so it frolics and rejoices.

Whenever it desires, it becomes playful and joyful.

ذريني أكن عبداً ليعتز جانبي

فاني لحر البأس قاسٍ عصبصب

فاني لحر البأس قاسٍ عصبصب

Let me be a slave, that my standing may be exalted.

Leave me be, so that I may be a devoted slave,

For I am indeed fierce in battle, harsh and mighty.

For I am fierce in valor, stern and bold.

لقد كنتُ جبار الفؤاد أبية

لقد كنتُ جبار الفؤاد أبية

فلله ما هذا الهوان المحبب

فلله ما هذا الهوان المحبب

I was indeed mighty of heart, proud and unbowed.

Indeed I was unyielding and defiant of heart,

So, by God, what is this cherished abasement?

Yet by God, how pleasing is this humility!
