إذاwhen ريحwind الصباthe east wind هبتblows أصيلاًin the late afternoon
شفتheals بهبوبهاwith its blowing قلباًa heart عليلاailing
When the east wind blows in the late afternoon,
When the morning breeze blew gently
its blowing heals an ailing heart.
I felt a weakened heart in its blowing
وجاءتنيand it comes to me تخبرtelling أنthat قوميmy people
بمنwith the one whom أهواهI love him قدalready جدواthey hastened الرحيلاthe departure
And it comes to me, telling me that my people
And it brought me news that my people
have hastened their departure with the one I love.
With whom I fell in love, had departed
وماand not شفقواthey felt pity علىfor منthe one whom خلفوهthey left him behind
بوادin the valley البانthe bān trees مطروحاًcast down جديلاprostrate
And they showed no pity for the one they left behind,
They did not pity those left behind
cast down and prostrate in the valley of bān trees,
In the valleys of separation, fallen and abandoned
يحنhe yearns صبابةwith ardent longing ويهيمand he is lost in love وجداًwith passion
اليهمtoward them كلماwhenever ساقواthey drove الحمولاthe laden camels
yearning ardently and lost in passion
I yearn sadly and suffer from passion
for them whenever they drive the laden camels away.
For them, whenever they drove the camels
حملتI bore الضيمinjustice والهجرانand abandonment وحديon my own
علىagainst رغميmy will وخالفتand I defied العذولاthe reproacher
I bore injustice and abandonment alone,
I carried injustice and estrangement alone
against my will, and defied the reproacher.
Despite myself, beyond what I can endure
ولاand not أبقىleft ليfor me الهجرانabandonment صبراًpatience
لكيin order to ألقىI might face المنازلthe dwellings والطلولاand the ruins
Nor did abandonment leave me any patience
Estrangement leaves me no patience
to face the dwellings and the ruins.
To abandon the encampments and hills
ألفتI grew accustomed to السقمsickness حتىuntil صارbecame جسميmy body
إذاwhenever فقدit lost الضنىwasting sickness أمسىbecame عليلاill
I grew accustomed to sickness, until my body
I have grown accustomed to illness until
would fall ill whenever it was free of wasting sickness.
When longing leaves me, my body grows frail
ولوand if أنيthat I كشفتI took off الدرعthe tunic عنيfrom me
رأيتyou would see وراءهbehind it رسماًan outline نحيلاfrail
And if I were to take my tunic off,
And if I removed the armor from me
you would see beneath it a frail outline.
You would see behind it an emaciated form
