Lofty honor is not safe from harm
Honor sublime is not spared from harm
except by shedding blood on every side.
Except by shedding blood throughout the land

بُداًan escape لناfor us منfrom شرعةthe code القُدماءthose of old
This is the saying of the ancients, and we have found
Thus spoke the ancients, and we found
no escape from the code of those of old.
No alternative to the way of old
انif لمdid not نشدwe strengthen ماwhat أقامestablished جدودناour forefathers
فالويلُthen woe ثمthen الويلُwoe للأبناءto the sons
If we do not strengthen what our forefathers established,
If we uphold not what our forebears built
then woe, and woe again, to the sons!
Woe, then woe upon the sons!
أوor لمdid not نزينwe adorn سيرةa life محمودةًpraiseworthy
فلنخفthen let us fear شينَthe marring الوجهةthe countenance الحسناءfair
Or if we do not adorn a praiseworthy life,
If we adorn not a praiseworthy past
then let us fear the marring of the fair countenance.
We should fear the shame of a fair face

تركِabandoning التعندِobstinacy منany كبيرِgreat عناءِhardship
Or if we do not hold sway among humankind, is there
If we fortify not both worlds, is there any
any great hardship in abandoning obstinacy?
Escape from the toil of great affliction?
ياoh حسرةَthe anguish الآباءِthe fathers فيin أجداثهمtheir graves
اذwhen أخجلتهمshamed them خُسةُthe baseness الأبناءِthe sons
Oh, the fathers' anguish in their graves,
Oh the regret of fathers in their graves
when the sons' baseness has shamed them!
Humiliated by the baseness of their sons
ياoh ويلةthe woe الأمواتِthe dead انif رجعواthey returned ولمand did not

Oh, the woe of the dead, if they returned and did not
Oh the anguish of the dead if they returned
find what they had expected of the living!
And found not what they hoped for in the living
ياoh خجلةthe shame الأحبابthe loved ones انif سامواthey sought بناthrough us
شرفاًhonor يُداسُis trampled بأرجلِby the feet of الأعداءِthe enemies
Oh, the loved ones' shame, if through us they sought
Oh the shame upon loved ones if they were exalted
honor trampled beneath the enemies' feet!
By a nobility trampled under enemies’ feet

Rise up! For in the loins are people to come after us,
Rise! In loins are men who will reckon our deeds
who will tally the ill reports about us;
And in wombs are generations with bright, seeing eyes
وهناكand there فيin الأرحامthe wombs أجيالٌgenerations ترىwill see
أعمالناour deeds ببصائرِwith insight وضاءِradiant
and there, in the wombs, are generations that will see
our deeds with radiant insight.
