اذاif انقلبواthey departed بالقلبِwith the heart لاmay … not كانbe مَدمعُa tear duct
Let tears consume the eyelid on the night they bade farewell.
Let tears exhaust the eyes on the night we bid farewell
If they depart with my heart, may no weeping eye remain.
If they turn away, then so be it, though my heart weeps still

جميلٌbeautiful ولاnor طولُlength of الندامةregret ينفعُavails
They journeyed by night like the ransoming of birds; patience after them is not
They slipped away like birds released, after them patience is in vain
Beautiful, nor does prolonged regret avail.
Farewell is sweet, though regret will not remedy the pain
أضيقُI feel constricted بحملby bearing الحادثاتthe calamities منfrom النوىseparation
وصدريand my breast منthan الأرضthe earth البسيطةexpansive أوسعwider
The burden of separation’s calamities constricts me,
I'm weary of evading fate's relentless, crushing blows
Yet my breast is wider than the broad earth.
My chest is vaster than the earth's endless, open woes
وانand though كنتI am خلاعone who often casts off العذارthe bridle فاننيyet indeed I
لبستI have donned منof العلياءhigh honor ماthat which ليسis not يخلعcast off
And though I often cast off the bridle, still I
Though I've shed my armor, I'm still covered head to toe
Have donned high honor that cannot be cast off.
In robes of glory that will never fade or go
إذاwhen سلتunsheathed الألحاظُthe glances سيفاًa sword خشيتهI feared it
وفيand in الحربwar لاnot أخشىI fear ولاnor أتوقعُI anticipate danger
When glances unsheathe a sword, I fear it;
When eyes flash swords, I dread their deadly gleam
Yet in war I have neither fear nor apprehension.
Yet in battle I show no fear, expect no seam
