فإنso if يكُbe قدرٌa decree of fate قدindeed عاقَhindered عنfrom وطرٍa desire
فلاthen there is no مردaverting لماfor what يأتيcomes بهwith it القدرُfate
So if a decree of fate has barred the way to a desire,
If fate has prevented a return to past glory
There is no averting what fate brings.
There is no reversing what fate decrees
وانand if تكُthere is نهضةٌa rising فيin الدهرthe age واحدةٌa single one
فقدthen indeed غزوتُI have gone to battle ومنand among اتباعكyour followers الظفرvictory
And if there is but one rising in an age,
And if there is a resurgence now after an age
Then I have gone to battle, and victory is among your followers.
I have raided, and yours are the spoils of victory
ياO فارساًknight تحذرُdread الأبطالُthe heroes صولتهhis onslaught
الدهرُtime عبدكyour slave وهوand it is الصارمُthe keen sword الذكرُwell-tempered
O knight whose onslaught heroes dread,
O knight feared by champions for your audacity
Time is your slave, and it is the keen, well-tempered sword.
Fate is your slave, fierce and invincible
قدindeed أنحلتنيhave worn me thin صروفٌvicissitudes أنتyou تعلمهاknow them
وصارَand became موردُthe watering place آماليmy hopes بهاbecause of them كدرُmurky
The vicissitudes you know have worn me thin,
The turns of fortune have worn me down
And because of them, the watering place of my hopes has grown murky.
And the wellspring of my hopes is tainted thereby
فالنفسُso the soul جازعةٌdistraught والعينُand the eye دامعةٌweeping
والصوتُand the voice منخفضٌlow والقلبand the heart منكسرُbroken
So the soul is distraught, and the eye is weeping,
My soul laments, my eyes weep
And the voice is low, and the heart is broken.
My voice is hushed, my heart is broken
