If she burns her dwelling-place within the heart,

then who will honor her abode afterward?

    And tears on the day of parting are nothing but pearls;

we scattered them, as is customary, among the traces of the dwellings.

It was not spring that brought forth the blossoms; rather,

tears saw the necks of the boughs and adorned them.

And when parting revealed the secret of our breasts,

and the wide eyes firmly fixed their target within them,

we reckoned the eye's tears, as they streamed down,

as armor of beautiful patience, guarding them.

And when we stood to bid farewell, and her eyes interpreted

for my eyes what lay within the hearts,

she appeared as an image in a temple; had we

professed the creeds of the Magians, we would have worshipped her.

And not from rapture did we fashion verse; rather,

the light of her appearance polished the mirror of poetic inspiration.
