Whenever I glimpse lightning from the direction of your land,

neither my ribs grow still nor do my tears cease.

And if gray doves lament above the bān trees

just before dawn, my lament in the darkness taught the gray doves to mourn.

So be gentle with a heart that, in the blaze of its passion,

is burning, and with eyelids drowned in their tears.

My two night companions from Saʿd, head toward their land,

to the right, and do not deem the roads to it too long.

And turn aside to a region whose soil is mantled

with sweet, musky fragrance—how noble a region it is!

For there is the dwelling where they lived,

and through remembering it, the heart is healed and charmed.
