عمرو بن معد يكرب

قوم إذا سمعوا الصريخ رأيتهم

A people, when they hear the cry, you see them

الرمح لا أملأ كفي به

I do not fill my hands with spears,

ديار أقفرت من أم سلمى

Deserted abodes of Umm Sulayma

وسيري حتى قال في القوم قائل

أما العتاب فلا عتاب

وكنت سناما في فزارة تامكا

You were a mountain peak in the wilderness, complete

تباري قرحة مثل

You rival a festering wound not inclined to heal

أعاذل شكتي بدني ورمحي

My body complains of my spear and bow

لقد كان الحواضر ماء قومي

The rivers were once my people's water

أنا ابن ذي التقليد في الشهر الأصم

I am the son of him with lofty ancestry in the deafened month

عقرتم خيلنا وقتلتمونا

Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing to you.

وجدنا ملك فروة شر ملك

We found the king of Farwa worst of kings

ولقد أجمع رجلي بها

I have gathered together my two legs in it

أعددت للحرب فضفاضة

I prepared for war a supple coat of mail

أتوعدني كأنك ذو رعين

يمشي بها غلب الرقاب كأنهم

وكل أخ مفارقه أخوه

متى ما تلقني بالسفح يوما

تطاول ليلك بالأثمد

وإنا لقوم لا تفيض دموعنا

My soul weeps not for any broken back

دعني فأذهب جانبا

أخبر المخبر عنكم أنكم

ينادي من براقش أو معين

أنا أبو ثور وسيفي ذو النون

يهجن سلمان بنت البعيث

سبى الأطفال واجتز النواصي

أبني زياد أنتم في قومكم

وقد كنت إذا ما الحي

غدرت ولم تحسن وفاء ولم يكن

أعاذل عدتي بزي ورمحي

My weapons - spear and polished sword - protect me,

أمرتك يوم ذي صنعاء أمرا

I ordered you one day at Dhi Sanaa

ونحن هزمنا جيش صعدة بالقنا

We defeated the army of Sa'dah with spears

لمن الديار بروضة السلان

For whom are the abodes in the gardens of the Sultans

أيوعدني إذا ما غبت عنه

فاتنا بدر وأحد

فقلت لباغي الخير إن تأت خالدا

خذوا حققا مخطمة صفيا

ألم تأرق لذا البرق اليماني

Has not this Yemeni lightning struck you,

تقول حليلتي لما قلتني

My darling said when she abandoned me,

ونجاك خوار العنان مقلص

The weak-reined charger saved you, though far drawn back,

صددتِ الكأس عنا أُم عمروٍ

ألا هل أتاها من نهاوند أنني

Alas! Has she from Nahawand been told that I

لقد علمت أقيال مذحج أنني

I knew the men of Muzaḥiǧ that I

أمن ليلى تسرى بعد هدء

Has Layla been consoled after tranquility

ومرد على جرد شهدت طرادها

On lean camels I saw their herd before sunrise,

فلولا سراة الحي من آل مالك

Were it not for the horsemen of the living from the house of Malik,

أمن ريحانة الداعي السميع

From the fragrance of the caller, the All-Hearing,

لا تهني بعد إكرامك لي

Do not disgrace me after honoring me,

ألم ترني إذ ضمني البلد القفر

Did you not see me when the barren land enclosed me

ألمم بسلمى قبل أن تظعنا

Visit Salma before she wearies of us,

ألم خيال من أميمة موهنا

A hope from Ummaymah has come to comfort me

لمن طلل بالعمق أصبح دارسا

For he whose ruins at depth have now become frequented

أفاطم لو شهدت ببطن خبت

If Fatima had witnessed in a desolate valley

تمنت مازن جهلا خلاطي

Mazin wished for ignorance blindly

وما من قبيل بين مر وعالج

No tribe among the clans of Marr and Aalij,

فلما هبطنا بطن رنينة بالقنا

يبرون عظمي وهمي جبر عظمهم

لمن طلل بتيمات فجند

تمناني ليقتلني أبي

يمرونهن إذا ما راعهم فزع

إن الأعاجم عند الحرب قد عرفوا

لقد علمت خيل الأعاجم أنني

صبرت على اللذات لما تولت

بأني قد لقيت الغول تهوي

هاج لك الشوق من ريحانة الطربا

ما النيل أصبح واحدا بمدوده

ألا غدرت بنو أعلى قديما

ولله مسؤولا نوالا ونائلا

إذا قتلنا ولا يبكي لنا أحد

لو كان عباس هنالك حاضرا

لعمري لقد من المجالح منة

أجاعلة أم الثوير خزاية

يا أسفا على خزز بن عمرو

وخيل قد دلفت لها بخيل

من مبلغ عامرا مني مغلغلة

فلو أن قومي أطاعوا الرشاد

إنني بالنبي موقنة نفسي

ألا أبلغ لديك أبا علي

رأيت رجالا ناكسين رؤوسهم

ما فوق ما نالت يداي به

أعباس هل أبصرت مثلي فارسا

أعامر قد جربت في كل موطن

أكنت تراني يابن ظالم نهزة
