1. He wished me dead that he might kill me,
And you were his supporter in that.

2. Had I met you riding your steed
With its lion-like vigor unfurled,

3. I'd have met you with bared teeth
Like fangs ready to pierce and rend.

4. The unjust polytheist in all he concocted
With his claws and hands outstretched

5. Defiles the valley when he finds it one day
Then persecutes it and drives it away.

6. He bubbles and seethes vainly
With the scum that rises above his affairs.

7. He brings forth from his claws
Gnats from a forbidden land.

8. Had you seen what I have gathered
Above the roses you would spurn it.

9. You would see an overflowing crowd
And a confusing, jumbled horde.

10. And a churl with my hands who will not
Taste water if offered to him.

11. The likeness of his grandfather is his
Just as a father resembles his son.

12. I ordered you on the day of Badr
With an order clear and rightly guided.

13. "Do good" comes to the virtuous one
So he does it and is keen to obey.

14. Yet you were like the obstinate donkey
Annoyed by its saddle and tether.

15. Had you seen with clear-seeing eyes—
Few are those who find them—

16. You would have known your father to be
A lion whose claws strike and tear.
