1. Did you not see me when the barren land enclosed me
I heard a call that splits the heart, O Amr

2. Save us, we are a hapless tribe
We are urged on though we have no refuge

3. You task us, O Amr, with what we do not have
O Hawazin, look at what fate has done

4. So I said to my horses, “Look at me, for I
Am swift to you when dawn splits apart”

5. And I spurred my prize horse when I met an opportunity
On the hill's side until it was said the prize horse was lamed

6. And so I saved the captives of Maḍḥij from Hawazin
And none saved them but tranquility and patience

7. And together they cried, “Free us from our bonds
O brother of might, affairs come to pass from other affairs”

8. And I refused the captives whose killing today
Was no less to me than a moment's rest
