خليلي ما انفك الأسى منذبينهم
My beloved, grief has not ceased since we parted
وسابغات كأنما نسجت
And cloaks as though they were woven
كأني من فرط الصبابة عاشق
As if from extreme youth I'm a lover
ورب سوسنة قبلتها كلفا
Many a lily I have kissed feigning love
ويسل فيه من العنب الغض
In it is poured from the fresh grapes
وبيني وبين المستقلة بالنوى
Between my intention and independence
رب صغير الخلق ذي دهاء
Many a small creature with cunning
كأن عيونهن عيون عين
Their eyes are like the eyes of a deer
والأرض عاطرة النواحي غضة
The land, its corners fragrant, is verdant
إذا نشرت كانت على دارة البدر
If I shine I shine on the full moon's mansion
كأن الدروع البيض والبيض فوقها
As though the white coats of mail and the egg white above
مطوقة يغدو الندى في جناحها
Roaming with morning dew in her wings
ألا عودة من طيفه فيرى حالي
If only he would return from his apparition and see my state
عرفت بعرف الريح أين تيمموا
I knew from the fragrance of the wind where they prostrated
وقائمة فى يدي قائم
A palm with a palm
يخالف العهد في تصرفه
He breaks his word by his behavior
مشين إلى الركاب وقد أنيخت
I walked as though shackled, to the stirrup
ومرنة بعد الرواح كأنما
With a flexibility after the winds, as though
قد أحوجت أيدي الملوك إلى فمي
The hands of kings have now become dependent on my mouth,
من أين أقبلت يا من لا شبيه له
From where did you come, oh peerless one,
ويل كفكر في إقامة دولة
Woe to a thought dwelling on founding a state,
قل لهذا الحمام إن جهل الحب
Say to this dove who is ignorant of love
لما وضعت على قلبي يدي بيدي
When I placed my hands upon my heart
وتلك الأساطيل المسخرة التي
Those harnessed armadas passing by
ترى قطرات الطل كالدر فوقها
The raindrops are like pearls atop it
سيقوا إليك فلو سقت قلوبهم
Even if their hearts are brought to you, do not think ill of them for hiding too much,
كأنه طبق الدنيا إذا انبسطت
As if it were a platter of the world when his horsemen deployed
أساء إلى جفني فؤادي بناره
My heart has harmed my eyelids with its fire
وماجنٍ معشوق إذا اجتمعت
The melody of a beautiful beloved, when heard
قلق الفرند مشطب فكانما
The restless sea is choppy, as though
وذو خضرة مقسومة شق بينها
With a split greenness, between which
وأرى بقية منرتي قد فرقت
I scattered what was left of my nest
فصلن ممحضا تجد بين فكي
A tongue whose eloquence delights the mind
سقيا لطيب زماننا وسروره
Watering the goodness of our time and its joy
شكا في ظهره حدبه
His back complains of its hump
وقفت على الغصن الجديد كأنما
She stood upon the newborn branch as though
وكأن البنود أجنته الطير
As if the clauses had begotten it the wind
ومحدوبة في كل وقت ظهورها
Her appearance is waning at every moment,
محمد هل جوادك في الجياد
Muhammad, is your steed among the steeds
ومطرد الأعلام خال سرابه
The mirage is empty though standards advance,
أكابد ليلا لا يزال كأنه
I endure a night that still remains
وأغضف يلغي أنفه فكانما
As if his delicate nose were leading,
وراقصة أسبلت لمة
A dancer draped in a delicate veil
طيلساني طائر من نفسي
A bird of my breath flew from me,
لم تبق في الكفار الا هاربا
None remain among the infidels except a fugitive
ونأخذ منه جوده تحت هيبة
And from it we take its generosity under awe
قامت على يدها قيام وصيف
She stood up in attendance like a maid,
قد اختفى بين أغصان وأوراق
He has vanished among branches and leaves
تترى رؤوسهم عليك كأنها
Their heads appear over you as if
مالت على يده كأس فملت لها
A cup leaned on his hand, so I inclined towards it
فتى بارد الأشعار يفظع لفظه
A youth with cold poetry, his words are harsh
وليل بغى فيه الغراب جناحه
In a night when the raven folded its wings
والثريا دنت من البدر حتى
The Pleiades drew near the moon, until
وكأن الرايات وهي مع الريح
As if the flags fluttering in the wind
تعاورتهم نبال عن معابلها
Arrows from their quivers were loosed around them,
وثقيلة الأوصال تحسب أنها
Heavy-limbed, she thinks herself
لعبت بأيام الزمان وطاولت
She toyed with the days of time, and persisted
من كل ضافية الغدير ترى لها
From every overflowing stream you see
هبت لنا ريح الصبا فتعانقت
The morning breeze blew gently to us
وماء كمثلِ الراح جارِ يزيدني
Like the wind's flowing water it gives me
غنى وفوق جناحيه سقيط ندى
He sings, and above his wings falls the dew of dawn,
وحانية من غير رحمى على طفل
A tavern without mercy upon a child
وكأن درعك أنشئت من مزنة
And though your armor were hewn from granite rock
وماذا عليهم لو أجابوا فسلموا
And what if they had answered and surrendered
أنظر إلى الشيهم كيف انزوى
Look how the grey one coils,
صنعت كأجنحة الحمائم خفة
She was made delicate as a dove's wings,
ومما يقطع الحيزوم عندي
What makes my throat constrict
لا تلم هائما قد استحسن الوجد
Do not blame a wanderer who found a face fair,
إن وهب بن مسره

مخزومة في ثبج شخت
Shrunken in melting fat
وحنانة في الجو كدراء أقلبت
Soft and gentle in the air like shining stars
وقصيرِ الظهر مرفوعِ الخطا
With back erect and graceful gait
يرنو وقد ألف الكرى فكأنما
He yearns, though he is used to separation, as though
ودنت في هبوبها مشية النشوان
The breeze softly caressed the swaying branches,
وليس انبساطي في علاك مثقلا
My joy in your heights is not burdened
وجه أغر كأنه بدر الدجى
A radiant face like the full moon in the darkness of night
له لسانان من قرن إلى قدم
He has two tongues from horn to foot
وقفت على عباء والجزع بيننا
I stood upon a cloak with grief between us
ومحجل حر كأن أديمه
A head-veil with morning freshness decked,
تعلقن بالأشفار من كل فعبرة
My tears hang on my eyelashes, one after another
إن الذي ولى ففر بنفسه
He who flees has abandoned himself
وكأن المقاتل اغتاظ حتى
As if the warrior was enraged until
تكاتف حتى الطير حوله
The birds gathered around him,
وناحلة صفراء من غير علة
A flawless yellow palm, whose ruddy date-bunch
مرأى بديع في مصانع مجلس
A splendid sight in the council's halls
ويوما بدارات العقيق لو أنه
One day at dawn in al-'Aqeeq's abode
فأول ما يبدو فخلق سبيكة
First it appears like a creation of pure
شاهدتهم وأنا أخاف عناقهم
I saw them and I fear their embrace
وأنت ابتدعت لناعورتين
You created for us two fountains
كأن ليلى مما طال جانبه
As though Laila, from my long vigil,
ومهتبل بالجو والأرض مسرع
Rushing with ardour through the air and earth
ومضمومة في الخيزران كأنها
And clasped in the poplar as if she were
كأن حناياها جناها مصفق
Her cheeks are like the wings of a dove flapping,
أخطافة في يدي أم جلم
A pen in my hand or an inkwell,
كلفتها طول السهاد فراقبت
I charged her throughout the night's vigil, and she watched
كأنما الخيل أوله ضوارمها
As though their stallions at the outset of battle
كأن نؤادي في يدي خفقانه
وانظر إلى ملك النصارى كلها
على جيد الغزالة خلق جيدي
ومد ضبعيه في أعلى مزاحمة
وتشفق الدرع أن تنساب خائفة
يا فرجة للحادث المتكشف
عقيقة في مهاة في يدي ساقي
ومصروفة عن خلقها إن صرفتها
ومرنة والدجن ينسج فوقها
لم يرحلوا إلا وفوق رحالهم
وسخية تعطيك أقصى جهدها
للصبا منة على الروض هادته
ترى لابسي نسج الحديد كأنهم
كأنا من الإجلال تحت عماية
روحني عاذلي فقلت له
متوسط جوز الغلاة كأنه
قام على اليسرى خطيبا بها
ولي الشيب بعد عزل الشباب
وقائمة تسبي العقول بحسنها
كأن ليلى وفي إعادة أنجمه
لما رأت شعري تنير لونه
بمحلة خضراء أفرغ حليها
وجاثمة بين أيدي الملوك
ومدركات ولم تلب وليس لها
ومؤلف الأوصال يختلف الصدى
ويعيرك القلم المعلى واعيا
من بنات الكروم ليس لها خمس
أنا في الصيف راحة للنفوس
وضعنا على جمر الفراق خدودنا
قصور إذا قامت ترى كل قائم
ومرهفات كأنها شهب
لا تلمني على البكاء بدار
لحق السها في جذعه فكأنه
مروا كما محبوبي فمال تعج
فكأنما فيه بقية روحه
في نصفها من خجلها حمرة
في جانبي ليل وفي الثاني ضحى
في خضرة مفترة في غرة
أرى أهل الثراء إذا توفوا
