1. He who flees has abandoned himself
To fear, with no concealment for his soul
١. إنّ الذي ولّى ففرٌ بنفسه
للخَوفِ مكشوفٌ بلا سِريالِ
2. The cravens challenge him, though he thinks them
Frenzied with fear, not reasonable mind
٢. تُحدى به القوداءُ وَهوَ يَظنُّها
من رُعبهِ معقُولةٌ بعقالِ
3. He fled as if his limbs had taken wings
His eyes turning in terror and haste
٣. طارت بهِ وكأنّما أوصالُها
ولّت بعَينيها مِنَ الإعجالِ
4. He rode northwards, his heart aflutter
With the violent gusts from the north wind.
٤. ركبَ الشمالَ مولّياً ولقلبِهِ
خفقانُ هاذلةٍ بريحِ شمالِ
