وأحسن من قنو خضاب خود

ومهفهف لما رآني ناظرا
When he saw me gazing
وأغيد خده يندى فيجري
His cheek grows moist with dew that flows
نديمي أفق فالفجر قد لاح ضوءه
My friend, awake, for dawn's light has appeared
لعل نسيم الروض من خلل الزهر
The scent of the garden wafted on the breeze
زاد العقيق بخد غير منتقب
The carnelian added to a cheek not kissed
ومزنر كالصبح يحمل لمة
With wand entwined like dawn that carries light,
ولما أشاع الحب في الناس ملة
When love spread among people as a faith,
أشاقك باللوى برق ألاحا
The lightning flashed its gleam upon your abode
ومغنيين يقربان لذي الهوى
Singers who bring pleasure to the lover's ear,
يا حادي العيس من نجد قف العيسا
O guide of camels from Najd, stop the camels
يا من يريد على الإساءة ودنا
O you who seek our affection when you do wrong,
مشت فحكت مشية الجؤذر
She walked with the gait of a graceful gazelle
لولا الفراق لما بكيت نجيعا
Had separation not made me weep copiously,
لو أن يوما قتيل الحب طالبه
If one day the slain lover sought
يا من أراه الخير يكتم ضده

قد غارت الصهباء منك بوجنة

كل من أعرفه يظلمني

أما وقوام الأملد المتأود
With the steadfastness of the gentle-natured camel
ولطيفة في الرقص يعطف قدها
With graceful dancing her neck gently sways
ماست بدعص نقا يجاذب أهيفا
She walked with a slender waist that entices admirers,
ما البرق يلوح توقده
The lightning flashes, its kindling afire,
هل يدنيني من جناب خيامها
Does a lightning adorned with reins on its neck
سرى وقد عن لعيني الأرق
Sleeplessness made my eyes restless
فأيسر ما فيها لذي العقل أنها
The easiest thing about it for the rational man is that
لك الله من برق بنعمأن أبرقا
For you, may Allah grant flashes of lightning from clouds,
خليلي عوجا باللوى ها هو الجزع
My beloved twisted the tendrils, there, the slim one appeared,
أمن الأهلة والشموس خدود
The cheeks have become radiant from the crescents and the suns,
أودعوا الزهر حدوجا وقبابا
They tucked the flowers in chambers and domes
لله در عشية نادمتها

لنا بين بطن الواديين معرج
In the midst of the two valleys we have a winding path
قم فاسقني والغرب يطوي ليله
يا رب أنت ملأت عقد مصاحبي
فإن كان بعض الناس مشتبها به

قل لنسيم زار عند الصباح
لئن أذللت خدك وهو ليل
يا ورد خد خاله عنبر
أدرها كما مج الندى ورق الورد
يا أميس الأغصان من أوراقه
سفرن ووجه الصبح يلتاح مسفرا
لائمي في قمر بت له
ومهفهف أبدى الشباب بخده
عشقت الظلام وعفت الصباح
وقائلة مالي أرى الحظ وافرا
يحكي الغمائم جوده ولربما
إيها لصائل حليها ولثامها
قم فاسقني بالكأس إن أمكنت
رشأ تعلق خصره من ردفه
ومشى النسيم يجر فضل ردائه
