كعب بن مالك الأنصاري

فلا تتهدد بالوعيد سفاهة

So do not threaten foolishly with punishment,

نشجت وهل لك من منشج

You yearned, but do you have a yearner?

لعمري لقد حكت رحى الحرب بعدما

By my life, the millstone of war ground on after

الحمد لله الذي قد شرفا

Glory to God who has honored

أقاتل حتى لا أرى لي مقاتلا

I fight until I see no more a foe

بمذربات بالأكف نواهل

With cupped palms catching

عجبت لأمر الله والله قادر

I wondered at Allah's command, and Allah is All Powerful

أيا عين جودي ولا تبخلي

O my eyes, be generous and do not be stingy

إياكم أن يظلموا أو تناصرا

Beware lest they do wrong or you assist

فلو حلتم من دونه لم يزل لكم

Had you resolved without Him, time's hand for you

نصرنا فما تلقى لنا من كتيبة

Over the hills and far away

ألا أيها السائلي عن عشرتي

O you who ask about my people,

من مبلغ الأنصار عني آية

Who will convey my message to the Helpers

تركتم جاركم لبني سليم

You left your neighbor to the sons of Sulaym

فكفى بنا فضلا على من غيرنا

It is enough honor for us over others

فلولا ابنة العبسي لم تلق ناقتي

Had it not been for Ibnat Al-Absiyy

أنفق وأخلف ولا تكسب بمأثمة

Spend, and He will give you more, seek not wrongful gain;

سقتم كنانة جهلا من سفاهتكم

You led Kinana in ignorance and foolishness

يا للرجال للبك المخطوف

O men of shedding tears and weeping

ألا انعي النبي إلى العالمينا

Lo! Let me mourn the Prophet for all peoples

نام العيون ودمع عينك يهمل

The eyes slept while your tears neglected

فإن أمسي قد أنكرت جسمي وقوتي

If I have lost my strength and vigor

ألا أبلغا فهرا على نأي دارها

Convey to the tribe of Fihra in their distant abode,

لعمر أبيكما يا ابني لؤي

By the life of your two fathers, O sons of Lu'ayy

إذا قصرت أسيافنا كان وصلها

When our swords fall short, their hilts still reach,

طعنا طعنة حمراء فيهم

We stabbed them with a crimson stab,

لقد عجبت لقوم أسلموا بعد عزهم

I am amazed by people who found Islam after their glory

لقد خزيت بغدرتها الحبور

Betrayed were they in their treachery,

ونحن وردنا خيبرا وفروضه

And we came to Khaybar and its duties

من سره ضرب يمعمع بعضه

He whose soul delights in striking

أبلغ قريشا وخير القول أصدقه

Deliver to Quraysh and the best word is the most truthful

فكف يديه ثم أغلق بابه

He folded his hands, then closed his door

الله أكرمنا بنصر نبينا

God honored us with victory for our Prophet

فلا وأبيك ما بين واسط

No, by your father! Between Wāsiṭ and the corner of Sal‘,

وغسان أصلي وهم معقلي

And Ghassan is my origin and they are my fortress,

لقد علم الأحزاب حين تألبوا

The factions knew when they turned against us

ولما رأيت الود ليس بنافعي

When I saw affection was of no use to me

معاذ الله من عمل خبيث

God forbid an evil deed

ألا ابلغ قريشا على نآيها

Deliver to Quraysh the tidings of their fate,

وسائلة تسائل ما لقينا

A questioner asks what we have encountered

أقمنا على المرس البريع لياليا

We spent nights at the fertile meadow,

تلهف أم المسبحين على

The mother of the rosary-tellers yearns for

طرقت همومك فالرقاد مسهد

Your worries kept you awake, sleep was disrupted

يا للرجال لأمر هاج لي حزن

O men, for a grievous matter I am saddened

صفية قومي ولا تعجزي

O Safiyya, arise, do not despair,

فإن يك موسى كلم الله جهرة

If Moses spoke to God openly

وباكية حراء تحزن بالبكا

Weeping bitterly, she grieves with crying,

بكت عيني وحق لها بكاها

My eyes wept and they had the right to their weeping

لم إلاله به شعثا ورم به

The Lord has left him disheveled and confounded

أبقى لنا حدث الحروب بقية

The events of wars have left us a legacy

قضينا من تهامة كل ريب

We have dispelled all doubt from Tihama,

أتحسب أولاد اللقيطة أننا

Do the sons of Al-Liqita think we are not like them in horsemanship?

ألا هل أتى غسان في نأي دارها

Has Ghassan in her home afar been told

لو أن بني لحيان كانوا تناظروا

Had the sons of Lihyan only cared to consider,

تعلم رسول الله أنك مدركي

إن الخيال من الحسناء قد طرقا

إذا ما كنفنا هولها جاء هولها

ما بال هم عميد بات يطرقني

وأغضوا عن الفحشاء لا تعرضوا لها

فأسأل الناس لا أبا لك عنا

لقد طارت شعاعا كل وجه

سائل قريشا غداة السفح من أحد

لم يغذها قد ولا نصيف

على حين أن قالت لأيمن أمه

تمنى كتاب الله أول ليله

ولولا بنوها حولها لخبطتها

ألا هل أتى غسان عنا ودونهم

إنك عمر أبيك الكريم

من يفعل الحسنات الله يشكرها

يا عيني فابكي بدمع ذرى

وعدنا أبا سفيان بدراً فلم نجد
