وخل كان يخفض لي جناحا
And a friend lowered his wing for me
يحصى الحصى ويعد الرمل أصغره
The pebbles are counted and the grains of sand, even the smallest,
جعلوا القنا أقلامهم وطروسهم
They made the spears their pens and the roosters their ink,
فلا ولد يروعني بسقم
No child troubles me with sickness,
وقائل كيف تهاجرتما
And someone asks, "Why did you part?"
إذا قلت في شيء نعم فأتمه
If you say "yes" to something, then fulfill it,
إذا سلمت نفس الفتى من مصيبة
When a young man's soul is spared from calamity
ألا رب أمر قد تربت وحاجة
Oh, many a case which made me grieve, and want
وخليت برذوني يلوك شكيمه
I left my garden unkempt, overgrown with weeds
ومتى اختبرت أبا العلاء وجدته
Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing to you.
رأيت المعلى ليس يشبه عمه
I saw the eminent one does not resemble his uncle
وأغنى اللَه بالحسن بن سهلِ
God enriched Hasan ibn Sahl with gifts
ومنتظر للموت في كل ساعة
Awaiting death every hour
ألا إنما الدنيا على المرء فتنة
Behold! This world is but a test for man
زرعنا فلما سلم الله زرعنا
We planted, and when God allowed our planting to be complete
ارض من المرء في مودته
Judge a man's affection from what he shows you outwardly,
يطول بقربك اليوم القصير
The short day lengthens in your presence
أبا جعفر يا بن الجحاجحة الغر
O Abu Ja'far, O son of generous people
للموت أيسر عندي
Death is easier for me
لا ترهقنك ضجرة من سائل
Do not let weariness with a questioner weigh you down
إن كنت لا ترهب ذمي لما
If you are not appalled by my blame
أدنى خطاك الهند والصين
India and China bowed down at your slightest step,
وذو اللب وقاف لدى كل مشكل
He who is wise pauses at every problem,
لئن كنت محتاجا إلى الحلم إنني
If I am in need of wisdom, indeed
الله أحمد شاكرا
God, I thank and praise Him
ما سؤتني إذ وضعت الثقل عن عنقي
When you removed the burden from my neck, I did not blame you
وإن من الإخوان إخوان كشرة
Indeed, among brothers there are many who are evil,
من سلا عني أطلقت
Whoever asked about me, set me free
إن الزمان وما يفنى له عجب
Time and all it destroys are wonders,
خذ من العيش ما كفى
Take from life what suffices
يا سعد دعوة من لا يرتجيك ولا
O Saad, the invocation of one who neither hopes in you, nor
وكن من الإخوان مستوحشا
Be among the brothers, lonely
إذا ما آمرؤ من ذنبه جاء تائبا
If a sinner comes repentant to You
صحبتك إذ أنت لا تصحب
I befriended you though you have no friends,
تشبه بالأسد الثعلب
The fox imitated the lion
طوبى لمن يتولى الله خالقه
Blessed is he who takes Allah as his Creator
لطي يوم وليلتين
One day and two nights' hospitality,
إذا نابني خطب فزعت لكشفه
When troubles befall me, I flee to unveil them
لا تعجبن لأحمق
Do not be surprised that a fool
أنت سماء ويدي أرضها
You are the sky, and my hands are its land
كم إلى كم أنت للحرص
How long to how long are you a slave
صل خمرة بخمار
Join a wine-flask with a veil,
لأشكرنك معروفا هممت به
I will thank you for every kindness you intend
من أعمل اليأس كان اليأس جاعله
Whoever acted with despair, despair made him
فيا شامتا مهلا فكم من شماتة
So spare your glee, don't be so quick to gloat,
وداع دون أوبته النشور
Farewell without its hoped resurrection
أليس عجيبا بأن الفتى
Is it not strange that the youth
وصل الملوك إلى التعالي
The friendship of kings leads to glory,
وسارية لم تسر في الأرض تبتغي
A carrier that did not carry on earth, seeking
رزقت عقلا ولم أرزق مروءته
I was granted wisdom but was not granted integrity
لا حين صبر فخل الدمع ينهمل
No respite when patience departs and tears flow
جددا مجلسا لعهد الشباب
Renew a gathering for the era of youth
طب عن الإمرة نفسا
Be peaceful, O my soul, though life is hard,
ما الفقر عار ولا الغنى شرف
Poverty is no shame, nor wealth a mark of merit,
إذا ما دعوت الشيخ شيخا هجوته
If you call an old man "old man", you insult him
جعلت مطية الآمال يأسا
I made the steed of hopes despair,
ثقي بجميل الصبرِ مني على الدهر
Trust in my patience with time,
أيا بن سعيد جزت بي غاية البر
O son of Sa'eed, you have done your utmost in kindness to me
تمادى به الهجران واستحسن الهجرا
Prolonged estrangement pleased him, so he opted for separation
بعمر كسكر طاب اللهو والطرب
With the passing of youth, revelry and joy declined,
أزال عظم ذراعي عن مركبة
He removed my arm's bone from the saddle,
أخطا ورد علي غير جوابي
He erred and responded to me without an answer,
وغرة مرة من فعل غر
One slip from virtue is no great fall,
نظرت إلي بعين من لم يعدل
She looked at me with the eyes of one who is merciless
ما كان مال يفوت دون غد
What was money that would pass without tomorrow
اضرع إلى الله لا تضرع إلى الناس
Plead to God, do not plead to people,
أبى لي أن أطيل الشعر قصدي
I refused to make the poem long
هون عليك فكل الأمر ينقطع
Be easy on yourself, for every matter will come to an end
ما مستزيرك في ود رأى خللا
How could you turn away a friend who saw a flaw
ماذا يكلفك الروحات والدلجا
What will it cost you, O soul, the winds and the night darkness?
أوجع من وخزة السنان
More painful than the sting of a snake
صفحت برغمي عنك صفح ضرورة
I forgave you unwillingly out of necessity
أبا بشر تطاول بي العتاب
Aba Bishr blamed me repeatedly
وإذا الكريم أتيته بخديعة
إذا نلت العطية بعد مطل
يزداد لؤما على المديح كما
وإني لذو ود لمن دام وده
أللدنيا أعدك يا بن عمي
يا أسير الطمعِ الكاذب
يا علي بل يا أبا الحسن المالك
قد بلوت الناس طرا
وباهلي من بني وائل
بارك الله للحسن
سأعمل نص العيس حتى يكفني
لله جوهرة يروق
موضع أسرارك المريب
متسع الصدر مطيق لما
ولا تسأل المال عن آمرئ
أبعد خمسين أصبو
إذا استقلت بك الركاب
أشد من فاقة وجوع
كم المقام وكم تعتافك العلل
ومنتظرٍ سؤالك بالعطايا
ما الجود عن كثرة الأموال والنسب
وهبت القوم للحسن بن سهل
عدواك المكارم والكرام
وقالو لو مدحت فتى كريما
رب غريب ناصح الجيب
نمير أجبنا يختلف القنا
وصاحب كان لي وكنت له
دببت أمشي على الكفين المسه
فيا شامخا أقصر عنانك مقصرا
ترى البصري ليس به خفاء
وإني لتثنيني عن الجهل والخنا
فلا تحرصن فإن الأمور
من يخبرك بسب عن أخ
وفعلت بي فعل المهلب إذ
وسوى اليأس بين الناس عندي
