وغرة مرة من فعل غر

1. One slip from virtue is no great fall,
But slip twice, and you cannot stand at all.

١. وغرّة مرّةٍ من فعل غرٍ
وغرّة مرّتينِ فعالُ موقِ

2. Do not rejoice too much at rising fortune,
Nor weep too much at troubles when they befall.

٢. فلا تفرح بأمرٍ قد تولى
ولا تأيس من الأمرِ السحيقِ

3. For nearness leads to farness in the end,
And farness brings you near, as fate does call.

٣. فأنَّ القربَ يبعدُ بعدَ قربٍ
ويدنو البعدُ بالقدَرِ المسوقِ

4. Who does not heed the ground beneath his feet
May slip and fall into the deep sea's maw.

٤. ومن لم يتقِ الضحضاحَ زلت
به قدماه في البحرِ العميقِ

5. And they who seek for glory and renown
Must earn it not through smiles but sweat and toil.

٥. وَما اِكتَسَبَ المَحامِدَ طالِبوها
بِمِثلِ البِشرِ وَالوَجهِ الطَليقِ
