سأصبر للحمام وقد أتاني
I will wait for the dove though he is late
لا تحملن لمن يمن من الأنام
Do not carry for those who are kind to you
جهد البلاء
Most people exaggerate about women and say
ما شئت كان وإن لم أشأ
Whatever you willed was, even if I did not will it
إن امرأ وجد اليسار فلم يصب
A man found ease but rendered not thanks nor praise to the Unaided.
أرى حمرا ترعى وتعلف ما تهوى
I see red horses grazing, fed whatever they desire
اذهب فودك من فؤادي طالق
Go away, though your love is released from my heart forever
ومتعب العيس مرتاحا إلى بلد
The tired traveler journeys to a far land
ومن البلية أن تحب
And from misfortune is that you love
تموت الأسد في الغابات جوعا
The lion starves to death in the jungles
ومن هاب الرجال تهيبوه
He who fears men, they will fear him
سأضرب في طول البلاد وعرضها
I will travel the length and breadth of the land
إذا أصبحت عندي قوت يومي
When I have enough to get through the day
وجدت سكوتي متجرا فلزمته
I found my silence a trade so I stuck to it
حسبي بعلمي إن نفع
My knowledge suffices me
ودع الذين إذا أتوك تنسكوا
Leave those who when they come to you, act devout
لو كنت بالعقل تعطى ما تريد إذن
If you were given what you want by reason
ولقد بلوتك وابتليت خليقتي
I have tested you and tried my creation,
كل العلوم سوى القرآن مشغلة
Roses are red, violets are blue, I don't speak Arabic, so I have nothing for you.
علي ثياب لو تباع جميعها
My clothes, were they all sold for a penny,
وأنزلني طول النوى دار غربة
The length of my yearning brought me to the abode of estrangement,
ولرب نازلة يضيق لها الفتى
For oft when first affliction doth assail
قيل لي قد أسى عليك فلان
I was told that so-and-so grieves for you,
وأنزلني طول النوى دار غربة
And the length of my yearning brought me down to the abode of exile,
قالوا سكت وقد خوصمت قلت لهم
They said you are silent though accused.
لم يبق في الناس إلا المكر والملق
Naught remains among men but deceit and flattery
تاه الأعيرج واستعلى به الخطر
The limping one wandered and danger overtook him,
فإذا سمعت بأن مجدودا حوى
When you hear that a rejected man embraced a piece of wood, and it bore fruit in his hands, believe it!
وما كنت راض من زماني بما ترى
And I was not pleased with my time as you saw
آل النبي ذريعتي
The Prophet's family are my means
كيف الوصول إلى سعاد ودونها
How to reach a happiness beyond
إذا ما كنت ذا فضل وعلم
If you possess virtue and knowledge
ارحل بنفسك من أرض تضام بها
Go away by yourself from a land where you are wronged
المرء إن كان عاقلا ورعاً
If a man has wisdom and piety
شهدت بأن الله لا رب غيره
I bear witness that Allah has no Lord other than Him
وعين الرضا عن كل عيب كليلة
The eye of contentment is blind to every flaw,
توكلت في رزقي على الله خالقي
I rely on God, my Creator, for my sustenance
إني أعزيك لا أني على طمع
I comfort you not because I hope
يخاطبني السفيه بكل قبح
The fool addresses me with all ugliness
فقيها وصوفيا فكن ليس واحدا
A scholar and a Sufi - do not be just one
خبت نار نفسي باشتعال مفارقي
My soul's fire faded when my beloved left,
بلوت بني الدنيا فلم أرى فيهم
I experienced the people of this world, but did not see among them
وأنطقت الدراهم بعد صمت
And the coins spoke after silence
ليت الكلاب لنا كانت مجاورة
I wish the dogs were our neighbors
ولولا الشعر بالعلماء يزري
Were it not for poetry being scorned by scholars,
يريد المرء أن يعطى مناه
Man wants what is decreed for him,
يا آل بيت رسول الله حبكم
O family of the Messenger of God, loving you
لقلع ضرس وضرب حبس
The tearing out of a molar and imprisonment’s blow,
قلبي برحمتك اللهم ذو أنس
My heart finds intimacy with You, O Allah,
أكل العقاب بقوة جيف الفلا
The eagle devoured strongly the carcass of the chick
لقد زان البلاد ومن عليها
The leader of Muslims, Abu Hanifa
إذا نحن فضلنا عليا فإننا
When we prefer Ali, they say we are rafida,
علمي معي حيثما يممت ينفعني
My knowledge, be with me wherever I go, it benefits me
ثلاث هن مهلكة الأنام
Three things destroy people
أأنثر درا بين سارحة البهم
Shall I scatter pearls among the carefree camels
عفوا تعف نساؤكم في المحرم
Forgive, let your women be chaste in the sacred month
لا خير في حشو الكلام
No good in prating idly, if
لا يكن ظنك إلا سيئاً
Think not of others, but with kindness still;
إن لله عباداً فطنا
Indeed, Allah has servants who are wise
أرى الغر في الدنيا إذا كان فاضلا
I see the free man in life when he is virtuous
إذا في مجلس نذكر علياً
When in an assembly we mention Ali
ولما قسا قلبي وضاقت مذاهبي
When my heart grew harsh and my ways narrowed,
رأيتك تكويني بميسم منة
I saw you in the season of my making
إذا لم أجد خلا تقيا فوحدتي
If I cannot find a virtuous friend, then
يالهف نفسي على مال أفرقه
My soul yearns for wealth to distribute
إقبل معاذير من يأتيك معتذرا
Accept the excuses of those who come to you apologetic
زن من وزنك بما وزنك
Weigh with the weight with which you have been weighed,
أجود بموجود ولو بت طاويا
I give generously though I have but little,
العلم من فضله لمن خدمه
Knowledge, by its virtue, makes all people its servants
رام نفعا فضر من غير قصد
He intended benefit but did harm unintentionally
تعمدني بنصحك في انفرادي
Advise me in private, and spare me advice amidst the crowd,
لم يفتأ الناس حتى أحدثوا بدعا
The people did not cease until they innovated heresies,
إذا سبني نذل تزايدت رفعة
When the ignoble disparage me, I rise higher in nobility,
إذا لم تجودوا والأمور بكم تمضي
If you do not give generously while affairs proceed according to your wishes,
أمطري لؤلؤا جبال سرندي
Rain down pearls on the Sarandib mountains,
خبرا عني المنجم أني
Tell the astrologer that I
عفا الله عن عبد أعان بدعوة
May God forgive a servant who helped with a prayer
إذا رمت المكارم من كريم
When you aim for nobility, be noble
إن الفقيه هو الفقيه بفعله
The wise man is wise through his deeds,
بموقف ذلي دون عزتك العظمى
With my humiliating stance, not your great pride,
أتهزأ بالدعاء وتزدريه
You mock prayer and spurn it
قنعت بالقوت من زماني
I have been satisfied with mere livelihood for some time
سهرت أعين ونامت عيون
Eyes kept awake while others slept
ماذا يخبر ضيف بيتك أهله
What does your guest tell his family
وأكثر من الإخوان ما اسطعت إنهم
Beware of too many brothers when fortune smiles on you,
يا واعظ الناس عما أنت فاعله
O preacher of men for what you yourself do
أحب من الإخوان كل مواتي
I love every brother who is kind to me
إني صحبت الناس ما لهم عدد
I have befriended countless people,
سيفتح باب إذا سد باب
A door will open when a door is closed
قنعت بالقوت من زماني
I have been content with little since my youth
الناس بالناس مادام الحياء بهم
People remain as long as modesty is in them
إن كنت تغدو في الذنوب جليداً
If you go astray, frozen in sins,
العلم مغرس كل فخر فافتخر
Knowledge is the root of all pride, so take pride in it
ما في المقام لذي عقل وذي أدب
There is no rest for one of sense and manners
إذا رمت أن تحيا سليماً من الردى
If you wish to live serene and healthy, far from vice
واحسرة للفتى ساعة
محن الزمان كثيرة لا تنقضي
قالوا ترفضت قلت كلا
يا من يعانق دنيا لا بقاء لها
شكوت إلى وكيع سوء حفظي
تعصي الإله وأنت تظهر حبه
سهري لتنقيح العلوم ألذ لي
إذا نطق السفيه فلا تجبه
وداريت كل الناس لكن حاسدي
أخي لن تنال العلم إلا بستة
دع الأيام تفعل ما تشاء
أفكر في نوى إلفي وصبري
تعلم فليس المرء يولد عالم
صبرا جميلا ما أقرب الفرجا
قد ضلوا
خالف هواك
أصبحت مطرحا في معشر جهلوا
أنت حسبي وفيك للقلب حسب
لما عفوت ولم أحقد على أحد
اصبر على مر الجفا من معلم
تمنى رجال أن أموت وإن أمت
ولما أتيت الناس أطلب عندهم
صديق ليس ينفع يوم بؤس
تغرب عن الأوطان في طلب العلا
أرى راحة للحق عند قضائه
الدهر يومان ذا أمن وذا خطر
لقد أصبحت نفسي تتوق إلى مصر
كن ساكنا في ذا الزمان بسيره
إذا المشكلات تصدين لي
يا راكباً قف بالمحصب من منى
أحب الصالحين ولست منهم
إذا المرء لا يرعاك إلا تكلفاً
إذا المرء أفشى سره بلسانه
إن الغريب له مخافة سارق
رأيت القناعة رأس الغنى
ومن الشقاوة أن تحب
كلما أدبني الده
لا يدرك الحكمة من عمره
إن الملوك بلاء حيثما حلوا
المرء يحظى ثم يعلو ذكره
رأيت العلم صاحبه كريم
احفظ لسانك أيها الإنسان
نعيب زماننا والعيب فينا
تحكموا فاستطالوا في تحكمهم
أمت مطامعي فأرحت نفسي
جنونك مجنون ولست بواجد
أهين لهم نفسي وأكرمها بهم
أعرض عن الجاهل السفيه
