كأن المدام وصوب الغمام

As though the wine and clouds' drifting veil

أبعد الحارث الملك بن عمرو

After Al-Harith the King son of Amr

لا تسلمني يا ربيع لهذه

Do not surrender me, O spring, to her

تطاول ليلك بالأثمد

Your night has grown long with sleeplessness

لنعم الفتى تعشو إلى ضوء ناره

The gallant lad walks towards the glow of his fire

أماوِي هل لي عندكم مِن معرس

Does one of you have a place for me, a married man

خليلي مرا بي على أم جندب

My two friends, pass by Umm Jundab

ألا عم صباحاً أيها الطلل البالي

O ruins of days gone by

يا دار ماوِية بالحائلِ

O house in Mawiyya, in Al-Hail,

رب طعنة مثعنجرة

Many a piercing stab wounds deep

رب رام من بني ثعل

Many a son of Tha'labah, his hands numbed with cold,

حي الحمول بجانب العزل

Live your lives alongside solitude

الحرب أول ما تكون فتية

War, when first it rears its head

خليلي ما في الدار مصحى لشارب

My friend, in the abode is no morning drink for one who's sober

أرى إبلي والحمد لله أصبحت

I see my camels, praise be to Allah,

رحلت ولم تقض اللبانة من جمل

You left before finishing the farewell cup

أرى ناقتي اليوم قد أصبحت

I see my she-camel this morning

أتاني وأصحابي على رأس صليع

News came to me and my companions at the top of Sali'

لمن طلل بين الجدية والجبل

For whom are the ruins between Juddah and the mountain,

ثوى عند الودية جوف بصرى

He settled in the valley near Basra

قد أشهد الغارة الشعواء تحملني

I bear witness to the gaunt she-camel carrying me,

سقى واردات والقليب ولعلعا

He watered the maidens and the heart was stirred

الخير ما طلعت شمس وما غربت

Goodness has shone as long as the sun rose and set

ديمة هطلاء فيها وطف

Rain clouds pouring, drenching the land

لعمرك ما قلبي إلى أهله بحر

By your life! My heart is not inclined towards its folk with love

أمن ذكر سلمى إن نأتك تنوص

Is it from mentioning Salma that we come to you wavering,

أجارتنا إن الخطوب تنوب

She gave us refuge, afflictions come and go

تالله لا يذهب شيخي باطلا

By Allah, my elder will not go in vain

يا لهف هند إذ خطئن كاهلا

O longing of Hind when they erred a shoulder

أبلغ بني زيد إذا ما لقيتهم

Convey to the sons of Zaid when you meet them,

ألا إِن قوماً كنتم أمس دونهم

Lo! Those you were above yesterday,

ألا إن قوما كنتم أمس دونهم

Alas! You were yesterday beneath a people,

ألا يا لهف هند إثر قوم

Alas, O yearning of Hind for a people

لمن طلل أبصرته فشجاني

For whom is a ruin I saw that made me yearn

ألا إلا تكن إبل فمعزى

Except you be camels, mere goats would do,

أبعد زيدان أمسى قرقرا جلدا

After Zaydan the fortress became impregnable

لمن الديار غشيتها بِسحام

To whom do the abodes belong that I have covered in the evening,

يا ثعلا وأين مني بنو ثعل

O Tha'labah, where are the clans of Tha'lab now?

أعني على برق أراه وميضِ

Help me with a lightning I see flashing

أحللت رحلي في بني ثعل

I pitched my tent amidst the clan of Thu'al

ألا يا عين بكي لي شنينا

Oh eye, weep for me bitterly

قالت فطيمة حل شعرك مدحه

Futaymah said, solve your poety praising him

ما هاج هذا الشوق غير منازل

Nothing stirred this yearning but the abodes

أيا هند لا تنكحي بوهة

O Hind do not marry an idiot

يا بؤس للقلب بعد اليوم ما آبه

Oh the sorrow of the heart after today, no longer caring

لمن طلل داثر آيه

For whom are those ruins, their glory long gone,

جزعت ولم أجزع من البين مجزع

كأني إذ نزلت على المعلى

غشيت ديار الحي بالبكرات

بدلت من وائل وكندة عد

إن بني عوف ابتنوا حسبا

إذا ما كنت مفتخرا ففاخر

سما لك شوق بعدما كان أقصر

لعمري لقد بانت بحاجة ذي هوى

ألا انعم صباحا أيها الربع وانطق

أحار بن عمرو كأني خمر

سما لك شوق بعدما كان أقصر

قفا نبك من ذكرى حبيب ومنزِل

إن بني عوف ابتنوا حسب

ألا قبح الله البراجم كله

الما على الربع القديم بِعسعسا

أرانا موضعين لأمر غيب

دع عنك نهباً صيح في حجراته

قفا نبك من ذكرى حبيب وعرفان
