1. Live your lives alongside solitude,
For her form suits not my shape.

2. What hardship is there for you in railing,
Save your own youth and lack of sense?

3. You wished us well for a day or two
Then grew miserly, like the worst misers.

4. O rider of a wild she-camel, I have loosed its halters
And walked gracefully on my feet.

5. I do not accept the authority of the one who calls me ‘fool’ by force,
Nor hunt with a pack of dogs.

6. I frequented a desolate, scabby, ruinous Taneefah
With hand-woven curtains as frail as spiders’ webs

7. So they pass their night tearing up the ground around it,
While I spend my night restfully upon my riding beast

8. Using as a pillow my, whose baudrons
Nether them seethes like an ant colony

9. Called Saqeel, though never adorned
With embellishment or burnishing.

10. My land has been vacated, and none of my family remain,
The suns have veiled the brightness of generosity.

11. A doe-eyed girl looked at you
A singer focusing on her son

12. She has her crown and her ringlets
And she exceeds you in bounty and merit.

13. I set forth judiciously but my forbearance turned me back,
Steering my deeds toward piety.

14. God prospers what you seek to obtain thereby
Righteousness is best provision for the road.

15. Of doctrines some may lead astray, some give guidance,
Moderation is the path, and yet some may diverge therefrom.

16. I break with whoever breaks with me,
And eagerly seek to mend ties with those who pursue reconciliation with me.

17. The brother of true brotherhood, of noble descent,
Easygoing, majestic lineage.

18. When I come he says, ‘behold!
Before you lie open plains and plains’ broad expanse’

19. I shared with him the morning cup, and did not
Ignore the decorum sanctioned for men.

20. With your rope I link to my rope,
With the feathers of your arrows I quiver my arrows.

21. When I do not find you upon a rightly guided course—
Your sword case reproached by one who precedes me—

22. The attributes I know well, and others
Your dogs bark not having perceived the like of me.
