1. Nothing stirred this yearning but the abodes
Of fair maidens amid blossoms that fade and wither
١. ما هَاجَ هذا الشَّوقَ غيرُ مَنَازِلٍ
دَوَارِسَ بينَ يَذْبُلَ فَذِقَانِ
2. Was it the memory of Nabhaniyyah that made her people halt?
Your eyes yearn southwards, O my friend
٢. أَمِنْ ذِكْرِ نَبْهَانِيَّةٍ حَلَّ أَهْلُها
جَنُوبَ المَلا عَيْنَاكَ تَبْتَدِرَانِ
3. As if they were the hasty bidding of one exposed for sale
When anointed with kohl and reddened with sorrel
٣. كَأَنَّهما مَزَادَتَا مُتَعَجِّلٍ
فَرِيَّانِ لِمَّا تُدْهَنَا بِدِهَانِ
4. And a westerly wind on a howdah newly wedded
Moved in the black night before daybreak
٤. وَغَرْبٍ على مَقْطُورَةٍ بَكَرَتْ بِهِ
غَدَتْ في سَوَادِ اللَّيلِ قبلَ السَّوَانِي
5. Steered by a driver seen through his thick beard
Trickling with scent of civet
٥. يُصَرِّفُها شَثْنٌ يُرَى بِلَبَانِهِ
وَلِحْيَتِهِ نَضْحٌ مِنَ النَّفَيَانِ
6. Take your pleasure in this life, for you will pass away
From delights and beautiful women
٦. تَمَتَّعْ مِن الدّنيا فإِنَّك فَانِ
مِن النَّشَوَاتِ والنِّسَاءِ الحِسَانِ
7. From white ones like Arameans and red ones like rubies
Their bosoms and polished anklets
٧. مِن البِيْضِ كالآرَامِ والأُدْمِ كالدُّمَى
حَوَاصِنُها والمُبْرِقَاتِ الرَّوَانِي
