- أخ وحريم سيئ إن قطعتهA brother and a sacred bond—evil if you sever it;
- أشاقتك منزلة دائرهHas a ruined dwelling stirred your longing,
- أعيني جودا بالدموع السوافحO my eyes, pour out streaming tears
- أكثرت قتل بني بكر بربهمI slew so many of the sons of Bakr in vengeance for their lord,
- الزير أنشد شعرا من ضمائرهAl-Zir recited verses from his innermost thoughts.
- أليلتنا بذي حسم أنيريO our night at Dhu Husum, shine!
- إن تحت الأحجار حزماً وعزماIndeed, beneath the stones lie prudence and resolve,
- إن في الصدر من كليب شجوناًIndeed, my breast holds sorrows for Kulayb,
- إن يكن قتلنا الملوك خطاءًWhether our killing kings was wrong
- أنادي بركب الموت للموت غلسواI call to the riders of death: set out for death before dawn!
- أنكحها فقدها الأرقم فيHer loss of al-Arqim married her off among
- إني وجدت زهيراً في مآثرهمIndeed, I found Zuhayr, in their noble deeds,
- أهاج قذاء عيني الإذكارRemembrance stirred the grit in my eye
- بات ليلي بالأنعمين طويلاMy night has lasted long with worries twofold
- تنجد حلفا آمنا فأمنتهHe sought aid through an alliance, secure, and I trusted him.
- جارت بنو بكر ولم يعدلواThe sons of Bakr acted unjustly and did not deal fairly.
- خلع الملوك وسار تحت لوائهHe dethroned kings, and beneath his banner marched
- دعاني داعيا مضر جميعاًBoth heralds of Mudar summoned me,
- دعيني فما في اليوم مصحى لشاربLeave me, for today there is no sobering up for a drinker,
- رماك الله من بغلMay God shoot you, mule,
- سأمضي له قدما ًولو شاب في الذيI shall press onward toward it, even if, in what
- سيعلم مرة حيث كانواMurra will know, wherever they may be,
- شفيت نفسي وقومي من سراتهمI healed my soul and my people by taking vengeance on their chiefs,
- طفلة ما ابنة المجلل بيضاءA tender girl indeed is al-Mujallil’s daughter, fair-
- عجبت أبناؤنا من فعلناOur sons marveled at what we did,
- غنيت دارنا تهامة في الدهرOur home flourished in Tihāmah through the ages,
- فجاءوا يهرعون وهم أسارىSo they came hurrying, while they were captives,
- فقتلاً بتقتيل وعقرا بعقركمSo killing for slaughter, and maiming for your maiming—
- فقلت له بؤ بامرئ لست مثلهSo I said to him, “Pay with your life for a man whose equal you are not,
- قتيل ما قتيل المرء عمروWhat a slain man—the victim of the man Amr,
- كل قتيل في كليب حلانEvery man slain for Kulayb counts for nothing,
- كليب لا خير في الدنيا ومن فيهاKulayb has no good in this world or whoever is in it
- كنا نغار على العواتق أن ترىWe used to guard the maidens jealously, lest you see them
- لابنة حطان بن عوف منازلThe daughter of Hittan ibn Awf has dwelling-sites,
- لقد عرفت قحطان صبري ونجدتيQahtan has indeed known my steadfastness and valor,
- لما توعر في الكراع هجيهمWhen their satire grew harsh in al-Kuraʿ,
- لما نعى الناعي كليباً أظلمتWhen the announcer announced the death of Kulayb,
- لو أن خيلي أدركتك وجدتهمIf my cavalry had overtaken you, you would have found them
- لو كان ناه لابن حية زاجراًHad there been an admonisher to restrain Ibn Hayya,
- لو كنت أقتل جن الحابلينIf I were killing the jinn of al-Habilayn just as
- ليس مثلي يخبر الناس عن آبائهمOne like me does not tell people of their
- من مبلغ بكراً وآل أبيهمWho will carry to Bakr and their father's kin
- منع الرقاد لحادث أضنانيSleep was denied me by an affliction that wore me down.
- نبئت أن النار بعدك أوقدتI was told that the fire was kindled after you.
- هل عرفت الغداة من أطلالDid you recognize this morning any ruins,
- وادي الأحص لقد سقاك من العدىO valley of al-Ahass, the foes have indeed watered you
- ولما رأى العمق قدامهAnd when he saw al-ʿAmq before him,
- يا حار لا تجهل على أشياخناO Harith, do not behave insolently toward our chiefs.
- يا طيرة بين نبات أخضرO bird amid green vegetation,
- يا لبكر أنشروا لي كليباًO Bakr, bring Kulayb back to life for me!
