مَنَعَprevented الرُقادُsleep لِحادِثٍbecause of an affliction أَضنانيwore me down
وَدَناand drew near العَزاءُconsolation فَعادَنيthen revisited me أَحزانيmy sorrows
Sleep was denied me by an affliction that wore me down.
And consolation drew near, then my sorrows revisited me.
لَمّاwhen سَمِعتُI heard بِنعيِof the death announcement of فارِسِthe horseman of تَغلِبٍTaghlib
أَعنيI mean مُهَلهِلَMuhalhil قاتِلِslayer of الأَقرانِequal adversaries
When I heard the death tidings of Taghlib's horseman—
I mean Muhalhil, slayer of his equals—
كَفكَفتُI wiped away دَمعيmy tears فيin الرِداءِthe cloak تَخالَهُyou would think it
كَالدُرِّlike pearls إِنif قارَنتَهُyou compared it بِجُمانِwith pearl-like silver beads
I wiped my tears in my cloak; you would think them
Like pearls, if you compared them with pearl-like silver beads.
جَزَعاًin anguish عَلَيهِfor him وَحُقَّand it was fitting ذاكَthat لِمِثلِهِfor one like him
كَهفِsheltering cave of اللَهيفِthe anguished one وَغَيثَهُand his rain of relief اللَهفانِthe distraught one
In anguish for him—and rightly so for one like him:
The anguished man's sheltering cave, and his rain of relief in distress;
وَالمُرتَجىand the one hoped for عَندَamid الشَدائِدِhardships إِنif غَذاnourished
دَهرٌan age حَرونٌobstinate مُعضِلُintractable الحُدَثانِcalamities
And the one looked to in hardships, if these are nourished by
An obstinate age of intractable calamities;
وَالمُستَغيثِand the one seeking aid بِهِthrough him العِبادُthe people وَمَنand one who بِهِthrough him
يَحميprotects الذِمارَhonor and dependents وَجودَةَand the goodness of الجيرانِthe neighbors
And he whom people call upon for aid, and through whom
Honor and the neighbors' goodness are safeguarded.
لَهفيmy anguish عَلَيهِfor him إِنif تَوَسَّطَentered the midst of مُعضِلٌan intractable calamity
حِصنَthe stronghold of العَشيرَةِthe clan ضارِبٌlaying down بِجِرانِwith a camel's underneck
How I grieve for him when an intractable calamity enters
The clan's stronghold, laying its neck firmly on the ground.
لَهفيmy anguish عَلَيكَfor you إِذاwhen اليَتيمُthe orphan تَخاذَلَتwithheld support
عَنهُfrom him الأَقارِبُthe relatives أَيَّماsuch utter خِذلانِabandonment
How I grieve for you when the orphan is deserted
By his relatives—utterly forsaken!
فَاِذهَبthen go إِليهِto him فَقَدfor indeed حَوَيتَyou have attained مِنَof العُلىlofty honors
ياO اِبنَson of الأَكارِمِthe noblest أَرجَحَthe weightiest الرَجحانِpreeminence
Then go to him, for you have attained, among lofty honors,
O son of the noblest, the utmost preeminence.
فَلَأَبكِيَنَّكَso I shall surely weep for you ماas long as حَييتُI live وَماand as long as جَرَتswept along
هَوجاءُa fierce wind مُعطِفَةٌveering بِكُلِّin every مَكانِplace
So I shall surely weep for you as long as I live, and as long as there blows
A fierce, veering wind in every place.
