العزhonor بالسيفِby the sword ليسis not العزُhonor بالمالِthrough wealth
Al-Zir recited verses from his innermost thoughts.
Honor lies in the sword, not in wealth.
شيبونٌShaybun ارسلَsent نهارَon the day of الحربِbattle يطلبنيseeking me
يريدhe wants حربيfighting me وقتليand killing me دونrather than ابطاليmy champions
Shaybun sent for me on the day of battle.
He wanted to fight and kill me, not my champions.
نصحتهُI advised him عنagainst حربيfighting me فلمbut did not يطاوعنيheed me
بارزتهُI dueled with him فهوىand he fell للارضِto the ground بالحالِat once
I advised him against fighting me, but he would not heed me.
I dueled with him, and he fell to the ground at once.
المالُwealth يبنيbuilds بيوتاًhouses لاno عمادpillars لهاfor them
والفقرُand poverty يهدِّمُtears down بيوتاًhouses سقفهاtheir roof عاليhigh
Wealth builds houses that have no pillars,
And poverty tears down houses whose roofs are high.
دَعْlet التقاديرَfate's decrees تجريrun فيin اعنتهاtheir reins
ولاand do not تبيتنَspend the night الاexcept خاليَfree البالِof care
Let fate's decrees run with free rein,
And never spend the night except free of care.
ماin the time بينbetween لحظةa glance عينٍof an eye وانتفاضتهاand its flutter
يغيرُchanges اللهُGod منfrom حالٍone state الىto حالِanother state
Between an eye's glance and its flutter,
God changes one state into another.
فكنso be معwith الناسِpeople كالميزانِlike the scales معتدلٌevenhanded
ولاand do not تقولنَّever say ذاthis one عميmy paternal uncle وذاand this one خاليmy maternal uncle
So be evenhanded with people, like the scales,
And never say, "This is my paternal uncle, and this my maternal uncle."
العمُthe paternal uncle منone who انتyou مغمورٌimmersed بنعمتهِin his bounty
والخالُand the maternal uncle منone who كنتyou were منfrom اضرارهِhis harm خالِfree
A paternal uncle is one in whose bounty you are immersed;
And a maternal uncle is one from whose harm you are free.
لاnot يقطعُsevers الرأسَthe head الاexcept منthe one who يركِّبهُsets it in place.
ولاnor تردُwards off المناياdeath كثرةُabundance of المالِwealth
None severs the head but the one who sets it in place.
Nor does abundant wealth ward off death.
