Indeed, beneath the stones lie prudence and resolve,

and a slain, middle-aged man of the Araqim.

Dhuhl killed him, so I shall not be content

until we annihilate both tribes, Qays and Dhuhl,

and the fire flies from us in sparks,

so the sparks strike Bakr and Ijl.

We have indeed killed for him, yet that is no vengeance,

until the swords sweep through Shayban in slaughter.

Peace is gone unless you bring Kulayb back,

    or submit fully to arbitration.

Peace is gone unless you bring Kulayb back,

or I make Shayban taste bereavement in the morning.

Peace is gone unless you bring Kulayb back,

or the foes suffer abasement and humiliation.

Peace is gone unless you bring Kulayb back,

or you taste calamity, coming to drink and drinking your fill.

Peace is gone unless you bring Kulayb back,

or turn away from your wives, unarmed.

Or I see that slaughter has exacted its due from men

who, in ignorance, did not turn away from folly.

Indeed, beneath the stones and earth he lies,

buried—a man who rose to eminence and was great.

By God, O Kulayb, it is grievous to us

that you should see my head adorned with oils and kohl.
