أَثبَتُّI struck down مُرَّةَMurrah وَالسُيوفُand the swords شَواهِرٌdrawn
وَصَرَفتُand I turned مُقدَمَهاtheir foremost parts إِلىtoward هَمّامِHammam
I struck Murrah down while the swords were drawn,
I stood firm once, with swords drawn,
and turned their points toward Hammam.
And turned their vanguard towards Hammam.
وَبَنيand the sons of لُجَيمٍLujaym قَدindeed وَطَأناwe trampled وَطأَةًa crushing tread
بِالخَيلِwith horses خارِجَةًgoing beyond عَنِbeyond الأَوهامِimagination
And we trampled the sons of Lujaym with a crushing tread,
And we trod the houses of Lujaim
with horses, beyond all imagining.
With horses swift beyond imagination.
وَرَجَعناand we returned نَجتَنِئُbending over القَناthe lances فيon ضُمَّرٍlean steeds
مِثلَlike الذِئابِwolves سَريقَةِstealthy الإِقدامِthe advance
And we returned, bending over our lances on lean steeds,
We returned tearing through Dummar
like wolves, stealthy in their advance.
Like wolves hastening to their prey.
وَسَقَيتُand I gave to drink تَيمَTaym اللاتِal-Lat كَأساًa cup مُرّةًbitter
كَالنارِlike fire شُبَّwas kindled وَقودثهاits fuel (apparent typo) بِضِرامِwith blazing flame
And I made Taym al-Lat drink a bitter cup,
I made Taim drink a bitter cup,
like fire whose fuel was kindled into flame.
Like blazing fire stoked with embers.
وَبُيوتَand the houses of قَيسٍQays قَدindeed وَطَأناwe trampled وَطأَةًa crushing tread
فَتَرَكناso we left قَيساًQays غَيرَnot ذاتِpossessing مَقامِa place to stay
And we trampled the houses of Qays with a crushing tread,
And we trod the houses of Qais a trodding
so we left Qays with nowhere to remain.
Leaving Qais with no place to dwell.
وَلَقَدand indeed قَتَلتُI killed الشَعثَمَينِthe two Shaʿthams وَمالِكاًand Malik
وَاِبنَand the son of المُسَوَّرِal-Musawwar وَاِبنَand the son of ذاتِDhat (name element) دَوامِDawam
And indeed I killed the two Shaʿthams and Malik,
I killed Shu’aym and his brother Malik,
and the son of al-Musawwar and the son of Dhat Dawam.
Ibn Musawwar and Ibn Dhat Dawam.
وَلَقَدand indeed خَبَطتُّI battered بُيوتَthe houses of يَشكُرَYashkur خَبطَةًa blow
أَخوالُناour maternal uncles وَهُمُand they بَنوsons of الأَعمامِthe paternal uncles
And indeed I struck the houses of Yashkur a crushing blow,
And I battered the houses of Yashkur with blows—
our maternal uncles, who are also our paternal cousins.
Our uncles, they are the sons of uncles.
لَيسَتwill not be بِراجِعَةٍreturning لَهُمto them أَيامُهُمtheir days
حَتّىuntil تَزولَvanish شَوامِخُthe towering heights of الأَعلامِthe mountains
Their days shall not return to them
Their days will not return to them
until the towering mountains vanish.
Until the tallest banners bow down.
قَتَلواthey killed كُلَيباًKulayb ثُمَّthen قالواthey said أَرتِعواallow free grazing!
كَذِبواthey lied وَرَبِّby the Lord of الحِلِّthe unconsecrated state وَالإِحرامِand ritual consecration
They killed Kulayb, then said, 'Allow free grazing!'
They killed Kulayb, then said, “Graze freely,”
They lied—by the Lord of the profane and the sacred!
They lied, by the Lord of sanctity and pilgrimage!
حَتّىuntil تُلَفُّis entwined كَتيبَةٌa battalion بِكَتيبَةٍwith a battalion
وَيَحُلَّand descend أَصرامٌbands عَلىupon أَصرامِbands
Until one battalion is locked with another,
Until war party engages with war party,
and bands descend upon bands,
And noble lineages battle noble lineages,
وَتَقومَand rise رَبّاتُthe ladies of الخُدورِcurtained chambers حَواسِراًbareheaded
يَمسَحنَthey wipe عَرضَthe surface of تَمائِمِamulets of الأَيتامِthe orphans
and the ladies of curtained chambers rise bareheaded,
Until chieftainesses act as champions
wiping across the orphans' amulets.
And wipe clean the honor of orphans,
حَتّىuntil نَرىwe see غُرَراًforeheads تُجَرُّbeing dragged وَجُمَّةًand thick locks of hair
وَعِظامَand bones of رُؤسٍheads هُشِّمَتwere shattered بِعِظامِagainst bones
Until we see foreheads dragged along, and thick locks of hair,
Until we see graves being dragged about,
and skull bones shattered against bones.
And skulls smashed against skulls,
حَتّىuntil يَعَضَّbites الشَيخُthe old man مِنfrom حَسَراتِهِhis grief
مِمّاfrom what يَرىhe sees جَزَعاًin anguish عَلىupon الإِبهامِthe thumb
Until the old man, out of his grief, bites
Until elders bite their hands in sorrow
upon his thumb, anguished at what he sees.
At what they see, in anguish for their loved ones.
وَلَقَدand indeed تَرَكناwe left الخَيلَthe horses فيin عَرَصاتِهاtheir open grounds
كَالطَيرِlike birds فَوقَabove مَعالِمِthe outlines of الأَجرامِbodies
And indeed we left the horses in their open grounds,
We left the horses in their meadows
like birds above the outlines of bodies.
Like birds above the landmarks.
فَقَضَينَso they repaid دَيناًa debt كُنَّthey had been قَدalready ضُمِّنَّهُcharged with it
بِعَزائِمٍwith resolute steeds غُلبِthick الرِقابِof neck سَوامِfree-ranging
So they repaid a debt they had been charged to bear,
We repaid a debt they designed for us,
with resolute steeds, thick-necked and free-ranging,
With resolves to subjugate the stiff necks.
مِنfrom خَيلِthe horses of تَغلِبَTaghlib عِزَّةًmight وَتَكَرُّماًand nobility
مِثلَlike اللُيوثِlions بِساحَةِin the arena of الآنامِhumankind
from Taghlib's horses, in might and nobility,
Horses of Taghlib, in their honor and nobility,
like lions in the arena of humankind.
Like lions in the battleground of men.
