لَقَدindeed عَرَفَتhas known قَحطانُQahtan صَبريmy steadfastness وَنَجدَتيand my valor
لَقَد عَرَفَت قَحطانُ صَبري وَنَجدَتي
غَداةَon the morning of خَزازٍKhazaz وَالحُقوقُwhile the claims دَوانِnear at hand
غَداةَ خَزازٍ وَالحُقوقُ دَوانِ
Qahtan has indeed known my steadfastness and valor,
On the morning of Khazaz, when claims were close at hand.
غَداةَon the morning when شَفَيتُI healed النَفسَthe soul مَنfrom ذُلِّhumiliation حِميَرِHimyar
غَداةَ شَفَيتُ النَفسَ مَن ذُلِّ حِميَرِ
وَأَورَثتُهاand I bequeathed to her ذُلاًabasement بِصِدقِwith the sureness of طِعانيmy spear-thrusts
وَأَورَثتُها ذُلاً بِصِدقِ طِعاني
That morning I healed my soul of the humiliation inflicted by Himyar,
And bequeathed her abasement with my sure spear-thrusts.
دَلَفتُI advanced إِلَيهِمtoward them بِالصَفائِحِwith broad swords وَالقَناand spears
دَلَفتُ إِلَيهِم بِالصَفائِحِ وَالقَنا
عَلىagainst كُلِّevery لَيثٍlion مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of غَطفانِGhatafan
عَلى كُلِّ لَيثٍ مِن بَني غَطفانِ
I advanced toward them with broad swords and spears,
Against every lion of the sons of Ghatafan.
وَوائِلُand Wa'il قَدalready جَدَّتhad shorn مَقادِمَthe forelocks of يَعرُبٍYa'rub
وَوائِلُ قَد جَدَّت مَقادِمَ يَعرُبٍ
فَصَدَّقَهاso believed her فيin صَحوِهاher sobriety الثَقَلانِhumankind and jinn
فَصَدَّقَها في صَحوِها الثَقَلانِ
And Wa'il had already shorn the forelocks of Ya'rub,
So humankind and jinn believed her when she was sober.
