أَهاجَstirred قَذاءَthe grit in عَينِيَmy eye الإِذِّكارُremembrance
هُدُوّاًin the still of night فَالدُموعُso the tears لَهاfor them اِنحِدارُa downward flow
Remembrance stirred the grit in my eye
Memories aroused the slumber of my eyes,
in the still of night, so the tears stream down.
As tears began to flow.
وَصارَand became اللَيلُthe night مُشتَمِلاًenveloping عَلَيناaround us
كَأَنَّas though اللَيلَthe night لَيسَhas not لَهُfor it نَهارُa day
And night wrapped itself around us,
The night embraced us
as though the night had no day.
As if the night had no dawn.
وَبِتُّand I spent the night أُراقِبُwatching الجَوزاءَOrion حَتّىuntil
تَقارَبَdrew near مِنof أَوائِلِهاits foremost stars اِنحِدارُthe setting
I spent the night watching Orion until
I stay up watching Ursa Major
the setting of its foremost stars drew near.
Until it starts its descent at dawn.
أُصَرِّفُI turn مُقلَتَيَّmy two eyes فيin إِثرِthe wake of قَومٍa people
تَبايَنَتِgrew far apart البِلادُthe lands بِهِمwith them فَغارواso they vanished
I turn my eyes in the wake of a people
I turn my eyelids searching for a people
whom the lands scattered far apart, and who vanished.
Whose lands have become desolate since they left.
وَأَبكيand I weep وَالنُجومُwhile the stars مُطَلِّعاتٌare rising
كَأَنas though لَمhad not تَحوِهاenclosed them عَنّيaway from me البِحارُthe seas
And I weep while the stars are rising,
I cry while stars twinkle above
as though the seas had not hidden them from me,
As if oceans could not hide them from me,
عَلىfor مَنone who لَوif نُعيتُmy death were announced وَكانَand he were alive حَيّاًalive
لَقادَwould surely have led الخَيلَthe horses يَحجُبُهاconceals them الغُبارُthe dust
for one who, had my death been announced while he lived,
For one - had he died and I was told,
would have led the horses, veiled by dust.
Horses would have raised clouds of dust to hide him.
دَعَوتُكَI called you ياO كُلَيبُKulayb فَلَمbut did not تُجِبنيyou answer me
وَكَيفَand how يُجيبُنيcan answer me البَلَدُthe land القِفارُdesolate
I called you, O Kulayb, but you did not answer me.
I called you, Kulayb, but you did not answer.
Yet how can the desolate land answer me?
How can the barren land answer me?
أَجِبنيanswer me ياO كُلَيبُKulayb خَلاكَhas spared you ذَمُّblame
ضَنيناتُcherished ones النُفوسِof souls لَهاfor them مَزارُa place of visitation
Answer me, O Kulayb; you are beyond reproach.
Answer me, O Kulayb when others blame you,
Those dear to the soul have a place of visitation.
Grieving souls will always defend you.
أَجِبنيanswer me ياO كُلَيبُKulayb خَلاكَhas spared you ذَمُّblame
لَقَدindeed فُجِعَتwas bereaved بِفارِسِهاof its horseman نِزارُNizar
Answer me, O Kulayb; you are beyond reproach.
Answer me, O Kulayb, for only you they blame,
Nizar has indeed been bereaved of its horseman.
The clan of Nizār has lost its brave knight.
سَقاكَmay it water you الغَيثُthe rain إِنَّكَindeed you كُنتَwere غَيثاًrain
وَيُسراًand prosperity حينَwhen يُلتَمَسُis sought اليَسارُprosperity
May rain water you, for you were rain,
May rain water you, for you were rain itself
and prosperity when prosperity was sought.
And joy when hope seemed lost.
أَبَتrefused عَينايَmy two eyes بَعدَكَafter you أَنto تَكُفّاcease
كَأَنَّas though غَضاghada wood القَتادِof the qatad thorn-tree لَهاfor them شِفارُblades
After you were gone, my eyes refused to stop weeping,
After you, my eyes refuse to dry their tears
as though the qatad's ghada-wood were blades against them.
As if tears flow till seas run dry.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you كُنتَwere تَحلُمُshowing forbearance عَنtoward رِجالٍmen
وَتَعفوand pardon عَنهُمُthem وَلَكَand you have اِقتِدارُpower
And you were forbearing toward men,
You used to dream of men, forgiving their deeds
and pardoned them, though you had the power.
Capable, yet you refrain using your might,
وَتَمنَعُand prevent أَنthat يَمَسَّهُمُtouch them لِسانٌa tongue
مَخافَةَfor fear of مَنone who يُجيرُgrants protection وَلاand is not يُجارُgranted protection
And you kept any tongue from touching them,
Fearing to support those who can’t defend themselves,
for fear of one who grants protection but is not protected.
I saw being near you as the greatest profit,
وَكُنتُand I used to أَعُدُّcount قُربيmy nearness مِنكَto you رِبحاًas profit
إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) عَدَّتِcounted الرِبحَthe profit التِجارُthe merchants
I counted my nearness to you as profit,
More than what traders gain.
whenever merchants counted their profit.
Do not go too far, soon all will face
فَلاso do not تَبعَدbe far away فَكُلٌّfor everyone سَوفَwill يَلقىmeet
شَعوباًSha'ub (Death) يَستَديرُrevolves بِهاaround her المَدارُthe wheel
So do not be far away; everyone will meet
New nations as planets orbit the sun.
Sha'ub—Death—around whom the wheel turns.
A man lives among his father’s clan,
يَعيشُlives المَرءُa man عِندَamong بَنيthe sons of أَبيهِhis father
وَيوشِكُand is soon أَنto يَصيرَgo بِحَيثُto where صارواthey went
A man lives among the sons of his father,
Soon he will be where they are.
and soon goes where they have gone.
I see that life is fleeting,
أَرىI see طولَthe length of الحَياةِlife وَقَدand already تَوَلّىhas passed
كَماas قَدmay يُسلَبُbe taken back الشَيءُthe thing المُعارُborrowed
I see the long span of life, when it has passed,
Like borrowed items that must be returned.
as a borrowed thing that may be reclaimed.
When you died, it was as if flashes
كَاَنّيas though I إِذwhen نَعىannounced the death of النّاعيthe death-herald كُلَيباًKulayb
تَطايَرَflew apart بَينَbetween جَنبَيَّmy two sides الشَرارُthe sparks
When the herald announced Kulayb's death, I felt as though
Of light burst forth beside me.
sparks flew between my sides.
I turned and my sight darkened,
فَدُرتُso I reeled وَقَدand already عَشِيَّgrew dim بَصَريmy sight عَلَيهِover him
كَماas دارَتwhirled بِشارِبِهاwith its drinker العُقارُwine
So I reeled, my sight grown dim over him,
As the lips grow pale from drinking.
as wine sets its drinker spinning.
I asked the living where they buried you,
سَأَلتُI asked الحَيَّthe clan أَينَwhere دَفَنتُموهُyou buried him
فَقالواso they said ليto me بِسَفحِat the foot of الحَيِّthe settlement دارُa dwelling
I asked the clan, 'Where did you bury him?'
They said: “at the base of Mount Ḥayy lies his grave.”
They told me, 'His dwelling is at the foot of the settlement.'
I traveled hastily from my land to you,
فَسِرتُso I journeyed إِلَيهِto him مِنfrom بَلَديmy homeland حَثيثاًswiftly
وَطارَand fled النَومُsleep وَاِمتَنَعَand was denied القَرارُrest
So I journeyed swiftly to him from my homeland,
With no sleep or rest along the way.
and sleep fled, and rest would not come.
My she-camel walked past a grave
وَحادَتand veered ناقَتيmy she-camel عَنfrom ظِلِّthe shadow of قَبرٍa grave
ثَوىlay at rest فيهِin it المَكارِمُnoble virtues وَالفَخارُand glory
And my she-camel veered from the shadow of a grave
Where heroes and knights lie.
where noble virtues and glory lay at rest,
Near the loveliest homelands untouched
لَدىat أَوطانِthe abodes of أَروَعَa splendid man لَمdid not يَشِنهُsully him

at the abodes of a splendid man whom nothing had sullied,
By dishonor or shame from others.
nor had any disgrace befallen him among men.
Would you march with me, O Kulayb, when
أَتَغدواwill you go forth in the morning ياO كُلَيبُKulayb مَعيwith me إِذاwhen ما(emphasis)

Will you go forth in the morning with me, O Kulayb, when
The cowardly flee, aided by retreat?
flight saves the coward of the clan?
Would you march with me when
أَتَغدواwill you go forth in the morning ياO كُلَيبُKulayb مَعيwith me إِذاwhen ما(emphasis)

Will you go forth in the morning with me, O Kulayb, when
The lips of warriors are grazed by the swords?
blades hone the throats of the clan?
I say to the Tribe of Taghlib, victory is yours,
أَقولُI say لِتَغلِبٍto Taghlib وَالعِزُّand glory فيهاis in it
أَثيروهاrouse it لِذَلِكُمُin that for you all اِنتِصارُvengeance
I say to Taghlib, in whom glory dwells:
Yours shall be triumph.
'Rouse it; in that lies vengeance for you.'
My brothers perished one by one

My brothers followed one another and went forth for a cause,
For a cause that devastates the hopeless.
for which the weary people followed in succession.
Take my lifelong oath -

Take my solemn pledge, binding on me for my lifetime,
To leave towns and wander the land,
to leave all that the dwellings contain,
To shun pleasures and drink bitterness from a cup,

and to shun fair women and drinking from a cup,
To wear no borrowed clothes.
and to wear a robe that is not borrowed.
I'll never lay down my armor and sword

And I shall not lay aside my armor and my sword
Until the dawn takes over the night.
until day strips away the night,
Unless the clan of Bakr is destroyed

or unless the chieftains of Bakr perish,
Without a trace for eternity.
so that no trace of it ever remains.
