Who will carry to Bakr and their father's kin

from me a far-reaching message of inexorable doom,

and a fierce poem whose light endures?

Mountains wear away, yet its trace remains unerased.

O Kulayb, indeed the fire was quenched after you,

and after you I forgot the pleasures of the gathering.

O Kulayb, who will protect the whole clan,

or who will charge against the fierce army?

Who is there for the widows, the orphans, and the protected pasture,

and for the sword and the slender, smooth spear?

And I have indeed soothed my soul with vengeance on their chiefs,

with the sword, on the grim day of al-Dhunayb.

Indeed, the tribes kindled from our host

the heat of fierce death on the day of al-Dhana'ib.

So humankind has been humbled and shrunk back,

and the jinn, at the clash of iron armor.
