وَجَسّاسِand Jassas بنِson of مُرَّةَMurrah ذيpossessor of صَريمِa keen blade
What a slain man—the victim of the man Amr,
Not dead is he who lost his life fighting,
and Jassas son of Murrah, bearer of a keen blade!
Like Jassas ibn Murrah of brave endeavor,
أَصابَhe struck فُؤادَهُhis heart بِأَصَمَّwith a solid spear لَدنٍsupple
فَلَمand did not يَعطِفshow compassion هُناكَthere عَلىtoward حَميمِa kinsman
He struck his heart with a solid, supple spear,
Who suffered a blow that pierced his heart,
and showed no compassion for a kinsman there.
Yet he did not seek comfort or respite.
فَإِنَّfor indeed غَداًtomorrow وَبَعدَand after غَدٍtomorrow لَوَهنٌsurely weakness
لِأَمرٍbecause of a matter ماnot يُقامُbe withstood لَهُagainst it عَظيمِmighty
For tomorrow and the day after will surely bring weakness,
For tomorrow and the day after still bear
because of a mighty ordeal that cannot be withstood.
Great tasks not accomplished, of high endeavor.
جَسيماًmighty ماindeed بَكَيتُI mourned بِهِover it كُلَيباًKulayb
إِذاwhenever ذُكِرَwere recalled الفِعالُthe deeds مِنَof الجَسيمِthe mighty
I mourned Kulayb over it—a mighty man indeed—
Grievous is what makes me weep for Kulayb
whenever the deeds of the mighty were recalled.
When he who did this deed is mentioned.
سَأَشرَبُI shall drink كَأسَهاits cup صِرفاًunmixed وَأَسقيand give others drink
بِكَأسٍfrom a cup غَيرِnot مُنطِقَةٍgiving speech to مُليمِa reproacher
I shall drink its cup unmixed, and make others drink
I will drink the cup undiluted and serve it
from a cup that gives no reproacher a voice.
In a cup that utters no word of blame.
