إِذwhen نَبيعُwe sell الخَيلَthe horses بِالمِعزىin exchange for the goats اللِجابِscant-milking
إِذ نَبيعُ الخَيلَ بِالمِعزى اللِجابِ
Our sons marveled at what we did,
Our sons were amazed at what we did
When we sold horses for scant-milking goats.
When we sold horses for flimsy cloaks
عَلِمواthey knew أَنَّthat لَدَيناwe have عُقبَةًa substitute

غَيرَ ما قالَ صُعَيرُ بنُ كِلابِ
They knew that we had a substitute,
They knew we faced an insurmountable obstacle
Other than what Ṣuʿayr son of Kilāb said.
Other than what Suhair son of Kilab said
إِنَّماonly كانَتwere بِناto us مَوصولَةًbound
إِنَّما كانَت بِنا مَوصولَةً
أَكلُdevouring الناسِpeople بِهاwith them أَحرىmost fitting النِهابِplunder
أَكلُ الناسِ بِها أَحرى النِهابِ
They were only bound to us;
It was incumbent upon us
Devouring people with them is the most fitting plunder.
To ravage the possessions of the people
