    May God shoot you, mule,

with a sharpened shaft from among the arrows.

Will you not bring me to your people,

or bring me to my own?

    Are you forever ridden

by the afflicted and the unarmed?

And I have spoken, without swerving,

words concerning the sons of Dhuhl:

Listen: tell the sons of Bakr,

the men of the sons of Dhuhl,

and carry word to Salif and Hulwa,

as far as Qari'at al-Nakhl, the palm thoroughfare:

You began against your people with treachery,

    and aggression and killing.

You killed the chief of men,

and one who had no equal.

And you said, 'His equal is a foot,'

yet the head is not like the foot.

    Nor is the noble man

    like the base man.

A young man who was like a thousand of

those possessed of generosity and excellence.

You have indeed brought a dark calamity,

like a snake in a tree stump.

And indeed you have brought a raging calamity,

that grayed the parting of a child's hair.

And I was once a brother of pleasure,

then became a brother of toil.

    Listen, O my reproacher: desist!

May God curse you for your reproach.

    For we, mighty Taghlib,

rise above every man of merit.

Men who, in hardship, have no

    equal, nor any peer.

For what Jassas has not brought

upon them by way of evil deeds,

I shall repay the clan of Jassas,

as sandal is matched with sandal.
