- أأحباب قلبي والذين بذكرهمO beloveds of my heart, and you to whose remembrance
- أتعبت نفسك بين ذلة كادحYou wearied yourself between the abasement of a toiler
- أتيتك والآمال تسري إِلى مدىI came to you, while hopes journeyed toward a goal
- ادأب على جمع الفضائل جاهداPersevere in gathering virtues, striving hard.
- إذا كنت في نجد وطيب نسيمهاWhen I am in Najd, amid the sweetness of its breeze,
- أفكر في حالي وقرب منيتيI ponder my condition and the nearness of my death,
- ألا أن نبت الكرم أغلى مهرهاTake heed: the vine’s yield has set her bride-price high.
- الجسم تذيبه حقوق الخدمهThe body is melted away by the obligations of service.
- الحمد لله كم أسمو بعزمي فيPraise be to God! How often I soar with my resolve toward
- أنكرتني لما ادعيت هواهاShe denied my claim when I professed my love for her,
- آه من حر الفراق ويا حسAh, the burning heat of parting! And oh, the re—
- أهل المناصب في الدنيا ورفعتهاThe holders of office and high standing in this world—
- بالذي أستعبد أرواحBy Him who enslaved the souls
- بعض أخلائي صار ميتاSome of my close friends have died,
- تجادل أرباب الفضائل إذ رأواThe men of excellence debated when they saw
- تجاوزت حد الأكثرين إلى العلاI passed beyond the limits of most, toward the heights.
- تمنيت أن الشيب عاجل لمتيI wished that gray hair had come early to my locks,
- تهيم نفسي طربا عندماMy soul is carried away with rapture whenever
- جمالكم لا يحصرYour beauty cannot be encompassed,
- دقت معاني حسنكم في الملاحThe meanings of your beauty among the fair are too subtle
- دققت في الفطنة حتى لقدYou were so subtle in discernment that indeed
- دمع عيني على الغرام دليليMy eye's tears are my proof of love.
- ذروا في السرى نحو الجناب الممنعLeave behind, as you travel by night toward the inviolable precinct,
- سحاب فكري لا يزال هامياThe cloud of my thought never ceases to pour down.
- سر فكفى بفيض دمعي سلاMy secret is enough with the outpouring of my tears
- سرينا ولم يظهر لنا الغيم بارقاWe journeyed by night, and the clouds showed us no lightning flash,
- شرف المصطفى رفيع عمادهThe Chosen One's honor rests on a lofty pillar;
- طال عهدي برؤية الروض فابعثIt has been long since I saw the garden; so send
- عطيته إذا أعطى سرورHis gift, when he gives, is joy;
- في أرض نجد منزل الفؤادIn the land of Najd lies the heart's dwelling.
- قالوا فلان عالم فاضلThey said, “So-and-so is a virtuous scholar;
- قد تأملت ما بعثت به لاI have pondered what you sent; may you never
- قد جرحتنا يد أيامناThe hand of our days has wounded us,
- كم ليلة فيك وصلنا السرىHow many nights have we reached the beloved
- لا تلين الدهر أمر الورىNever take charge of people's affairs;
- لعمري لقد قاسيت بالفقر شدةBy my life, I have indeed endured hardship through poverty;
- لقد بعدت ليلى وعز وصالهاLayla has indeed grown distant, and union with her is hard to attain,
- لله در الفئة الأمجادGod bless that illustrious company,
- مقبل مدبر بعيد قريبApproaching, turning away, distant, near.
- من عذيري من معشر هجروا القولWho will vindicate me against a people who have forsaken speech
- نزهونا عن استماع الملامSpare us from hearing reproach.
- وأطيب شيء إذا ذقتهAnd the sweetest thing, when you taste it,
- وقائلة مات الكرام فمن لناAnd a woman said, 'The generous have died; who is there for us
- ومستعبد قلب المحب وطرفهAnd one who enslaves the lover’s heart and gaze
- يا بديع الحسن ما أحليO you of wondrous beauty, how sweet
- يا سايرا نحو الحجاز مشمراO traveler toward the Hijaz, girded for the journey,
- يا شبابي أفسدت صالح دينيO my youth, you have corrupted the virtue of my faith.
- يا عصر شبيبتي ولهوي أرأيتO days of my youth and carefree pleasure, do you realize
- يا معرضا عني و لست بمعرضO you who turn away from me, though I do not turn away,
- يا منيتي أملي ببابك واقفO my heart's desire, my hope stands at your door,
- يفنى الزمان ومحنتيTime passes away, and my torment
- يقولون لي هلا نهضت إلى العلاThey say to me, “Why not rise to the heights?
