وقائلةand a woman saying ماتdied الكرامthe generous فمنso who لناfor us
وقائلة مات الكرام فمن لنا
إذَاwhen عضناbites us الدهرtime الشديدharsh بنابِهwith its fang
إذَا عضنا الدهر الشديد بنابِه
And a woman said, 'The generous have died; who is there for us
She said, "The noble have died, who then do we have,
when harsh time bites us with its fang?'
When the harsh times bite us with its fangs?"
فقلتso I said لَهَاto her منwhoever كَانَwas غايةthe ultimate aim قصدهhis pursuit
فقلت لَهَا من كَانَ غاية قصده
سؤالاًa plea لمخلوقto a created being فليسthen he is not بنابِهdiscerning
سؤالاً لمخلوق فليس بنابِه
So I told her, 'Anyone whose ultimate aim
So I said to her, "Whoever's main goal is to beg,
is to beg from a created being lacks discernment.
From creatures, it is not with their fangs.
لئنeven if ماتdied منthose who يرجىare looked to with hope فمعطيهمُthen their Giver الَّذِيwhom
لئن مات من يرجى فمعطيهمُ الَّذِي
يرجونهthey place their hopes in Him باقendures فلوذيso seek refuge ببابهat His door
يرجونه باق فلوذي ببابه
Even if those we look to have died, their Giver, whom
Even if those we hope for have died, the One they hoped for,
they look to, endures; so seek refuge at His door.'
Who remains, provides. So cling to His door."
